    Question about foreign credentials accreditation

Hi. I want to recognize my foreign academic credentials for a federal job. Which NACES institution do you think would be my best bet based on your experience (not too strict, but fair and respectable nationwide)? Thank you.

I think that it would be necessary for someone to have personal experience with most, if not all NACES members in order to answer your question. One thing you might consider is contacting your school's alumni office to see if there are other graduates in the US who may have gone through NACES and then contact those alums in turn. Sometimes people have searched LinkedIn for members from specific schools.

I have reported here several times the experiment that I did in the mid 90s: submitting a paid application to a dozen or so evaluators for credit evaluation from a colleague with a set of legitimate but less common credentials, including a Bachelor's from a South American school, an Edinburgh Business School MBA , a Canadian Chartered Accountant credential, etc. There were dramatic differences among the dozen-or-so NACES evaluators, such as saying that the MBA was the exact equivalent of an American regionally-accredited MBA , or that it was not even equivalent to an American Bachelor's degree. It was all very confusing. And when I put the results in myu book, I got mail from readers about comparable experiences, such as an Excelsior Bachelor's being evaluated as less than an Associates, or equal to any other RA Bachelor's. The very annoying conclusion was that it may well pay to 'shop around' among the evaluators. Expensive but it just might be worth it.

After earning the B, M & D from USA schools, I earned a research M & PhD from a school in South Africa. In 2013, I submitted both SA degrees to the International Education Research Foundation, Inc. www.ierf.org and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers’ International Education Services IES. The evaluations were very similar and the cost was approximately $80 each. I was pleased with both evaluators.

Sadly, I believe AACRAO either has gone, ir is going out of the credential evaluation business, as part of a major shake-up and cutting back in the organization.

They have. Apparently, though, their service outsourced the evaluations to a subset of NACES members, so perhaps it doesn't matter as much that they're no longer in the middle?

Thanks, Steve. AACRAO still offers an inspection/evaluation service but only to registrars, who send them copies of suspicious-looking diplomas or transcripts. There's a huge amount of counterfeiting going on, and the bad guys keep getting better. Every time the legitimate printers come up with new security techniques -- watermarking, microprinting, metallic strips in the paper -- the bad guys match it and offer the same thing within a few months.
