They were on deferral, now it looks like they have withdrawn.

I suspect they will get it back at some point, once they can get the old schools and the weaker ones they have been letting in lately to agree on their outcomes reporting.

Interesting development. But it is strange there was no news released about this.

Apparently ACBSP has recently surpassed AACSB in one key metric and become the largest accreditor of business program globally.

Membership - Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs

AACSB always claimed they were exclusive and only 5% of the business schools had their accreditation. Well it looks like they were possibly passed-up over the last year.

Here are the damning Wikipedia sections here:

"It was regarded as the benchmark for business school quality among the academic community, but is now an unrecognized accreditor due to losing its recognition from the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and from the United States Department of Education"

"AACSB has been struggling with its CHEA recognition of late. On January 26, 2015, at the CHEA Board of Directors Meeting, CHEA decided to continue deferral of action on recognition of AACSB " pending completion of AACSB’s implementation of its policy on CHEA Standard 12B.1 that requires institutions or programs routinely to provide reliable information to the public on their performance, including student achievement as determined by the institution or program (Standard 12B.1, 2010 CHEA Recognition Policy and Procedures), as outlined in the plan submitted by AACSB in November 2014″. AACSB withdrew from CHEA recognition on September 23, 2016"

CHEA is not an accreditor nor is it any kind of government authority, so their recognition should be meaningless. But, for some reason, CHEA has become regarded as something to be respected on the same level as an accreditor.

Now, losing US DOE recognition is devastating.

ED doesn't recognize programmatic accreditors, since supposedly their only purpose in overseeing accreditors is in their role as gatekeepers for federal financial aid. (The only exception are the "gray area" programmatic accreditors who cover all programs at certain types of specialized school, like ABHES.) So it's not a poor reflection on AACSB for them not to be recognized by ED since they actually can't be.

I was going by what the wiki page said. I hadn't ever looked at every accreditor listed at the US DOE site so I didn't consider that the information might not be accurate.

    Unbelievable.

I believe that outside of this forum, no one would care. Loss of CHEA recognition would be important for maybe likes of COE and ACCSC. AACSB is better known than CHEA; the news will not even register.

CHEA answered the question as to who accredits the Acceditors for AACSB. Now that this is no longer the case (at present, anyway) how will this impact the status of AACSB?

Recently there was a mention on the board of a non-US school that was unaccredited by anyone except they were accredited by AACSB. That was the one thing that gave them a little credibility. Now that would seem to mean less.

Well, remember that these are private organizations and not 'official' government agencies.

I would say that CHEA is not an accreditor but an organization free to recognize or not recognize an accreditor. I could also refuse to recognize an accreditor if I wished to be laughed at.

To what extent schools covet AACSB accreditation will determine AACSB's status.

There was? We've had a number of ones that were only programmatically accredited by ACBSP, but I don't remember any that were only programmatically accredited by AACSB.

Not necessarily. That's more or less Levicoff's approach to national accreditors. I may not agree with him, but I doubt anyone's laughing at him about it.
