Shirley University, that is: http : // uos-edu dot com

Registration details point in the direction of a visa and immigration consultancy firm with offices in India, Dubai and the UK.

Shirley's siblings are Nightingale, Worchester and Halifax University.

Halifax? Now there's a real oldie, in name at least, among degree mills. A send-up of a school, so ancient it's classic. There's likely enough info for a book, or at least a doctoral-length thesis, on the permutations, incarnations and various abominations of "Halifax U." over the years! A perennial favourite, to be sure.

Shirley, Nightingale and Worchester all appear to be founded as Panama-registered International Business Corporations. Have not yet found the current incarnation of Halifax U. Last one I could find was an unaccredited school of that name, located in Wyoming - closed around the time that state adopted its "accredit or move/die" law. I can remember other, non-US versions, probably unrelated. The real University of Halifax only lasted 5 years. It was meant to be an "umbrella institution," but the idea was not accepted by other Nova Scotia schools. University of Halifax was abolished in 1881.

The US version of Halifax U. listed its location as Casper, WY. Around 2006-2008, some of its apostilled degrees were surfacing in the Middle East. Re. UK (or other) location of Halifax University: This entertaining and somewhat sarcastic comment appeared in another forum in 2008: "Halifax University London is the trading name of Halifax International College and is a part of Halifax University world wide chain of fried chicken."

I am still unable to locate a current site for Halifax International College or Halifax University. I'm certainly not about to lose any sleep over it.

Well, at least I got something on Halifax University, UK. Here it is:

    http://www.obhe.ac.uk/documents/2004/Articles/Preston_University_and_Halifax_University_unaccredited_US_universities_operating_in_the_UK_but_on_what_basis_

Apparently, the Wyoming school was said to be operating in the UK. It is believed to have been an offshoot of Preston University, Wyoming, with most of the same officials. After the Wyoming school closed, one of those officials, Abdul Basit, ended up owning/running several (about nine) Preston U. campuses in his native Pakistan - some having Ministry approval, others not.

Mr. Basit came to Preston after a distinguished career as V.P. of the famous "accreditor," WAUC - World Association of Universities and Colleges, owned by the late Dr. Maxine Klein Asher. No doubt many of our long-time members know of Dr. Asher. Her own degrees, at least, were real - and she was certainly a character.
