I am taking a poll. I'm enrolled in a DETC-accredited university. I am 2 classes away from my degree. I get financial aid too. Should I go on and complete my degree at the DETC college, or transfer to a regionally accredited college and finish the degree before the financial aid runs out? That will take me an additional 30 credit hours (1.25-1.5 years). I am pretty burnt out with classes too, plus I can get into several regionally accredited graduate schools etc. I'd love to have a regional degree, but I know it is not mandatory and the department of education, etc., recognizes DETC. What would you do?

Finish what you started. You're THAT close - it will save you all kinds of money - or debt. You knew at the start your degree would be NA - and there's nothing wrong with that.

Besides - you've said you want an RA Masters and know you can get into RA grad school -- so what does it matter that your Bachelor's will be NA? As I said, nothing wrong with NA anyway, so...

Not a good time or circumstance to make a wholesale change, I'd say. The money you'll save by not changing will likely pay for a goodly portion of your Master's.

Plus this: You presuppose that you can transfer all your credits to an RA school and they'll all be accepted. This is a dangerous assumption. Some schools will just say no and others might accept some credits yet reject others. You haven't said what school or what subject area or what grad school but based on scanty information I'd agree with the previous recommendations.

I'd finish the one you're doing, for the same reasons as everyone else said.

Ok people. Thanks for the responses. I will finish what I started. I have a good list of RA colleges that will accept a DETC bachelor's degree for entrance in a master's degree program. Most don't require the GRE/GMAT annoying grad school test drama either. Good job with the answers.

You may also want to look at the list of schools that are in the Higher Education Transfer Alliance, which means they agree to consider credit and applications from all accredited schools regardless of category of accreditation.

It's a smart move to finish with DETC accredited university and then choose a regional university for your grad school. I did the same exact thing.

    Good luck.

"Consider" being the key word! Thanks for the link, this is an excellent find! For years there have been numerous obstacles for students that are graduates outside of regional accreditation applying to RA schools. Even from regionally accredited to other regionally accredited schools there have been challenges. Glad to see some schools embracing a common sense attitude towards education!

HETA's been mentioned here before, but it seems not recently. Glad you all think it's a useful point of reference.

Hey mods can we turn this thread into a sticky? It has a good link for those that are in NA/DETC colleges.

To everyone and Kizmet. I already have transfer credit evaluations from other regionally accredited colleges that would give me all but 30 credit hours towards a 120 credit hour bachelors degree. I would get 97 credits from Excelsior College. I just don't really feel like doing any extra work towards a bachelors degree. I don't feel like doing an Excelsior PLA portfolio, as it sounds like a long and annoying process. Plus Excelsior sounds like a money pit, thought I could be wrong. I can test out of my last 2 classes and get my DETC accredited degree. 1 CLEP test, and one Excelsior or DSST exam (or Aleks when ACE gives them back their accreditation), and I am done!!! I tried to see if I could get the Athabasca University 90 credit hour bachelors degree, but they won't take any national credits, or CLEP exams, etc., plus they are rude as heck. I heard that about Canadians. I won't let that experience make me start stereotyping Canadians.

    Finish your DETC degree

I'd finish your current degree and see what happens. If all goes well with the DETC degree (you get the job, promotion, admission to a master's program etc.) then move forward with your plans. If having a DETC degree creates a big problem you can still get a second bachelor's at Excelsior. Chances are, though, that the DETC degree will work out just fine and this was never a real problem. Changing course now might cost a lot of money and slow or derail your momentum.

Easy now, Johann. It isn't all Canadians. There are exceptions to every rule--like you.

I've been tarred with the brush, RAM - and it's not coming off. It's no different than saying "I've heard that about Jews, Catholics, Blacks etc." Imagine what would happen on DI if I ever dared say "Harvard was very rude to me. I've heard that about Americans."

Wonderful place, this Global Fraud they call the Internet. I've been on it 20 years now and met all kinds of people.... Bah!

We love you Johann, even if you're a black catholic canadian jew (probably left handed as well). Just don't tell me that you're with the Golden Dawn.:lmao:

Rude Canadian? Seems oxymoronic to me. During the nine years we were involved with the Edinburgh Business School, we had three people handling incoming calls in response to advertising. There was real competition among them to answer the calls from Canada -- inevitably the friendliest and nicest folks -- and they did much better on the exams, thus stayed in the program longer, which was good for our bottom line.

Johann, I like Canadian bacon, and Canada dry ginger ale. Doesn't that make me sound like I am cool with Canada. I love you man!!!
