I am looking at the University of the Highlands and Islands entry/access level course in Christian Theology, and noticed that their degrees are structured quite differently than US ones. Does anybody know what the equivalent of a BA (Hons) is in the US? Or is it the same as a BA degree? And is the University of the Highlands and Islands (more specifically, their Highlands Theological College) recognized as legit in the US? Thanks!

It is customary to give a url when enquiring about a school. See below.

The British (Hons) system is explained here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_undergraduate_degree_classification They say BA (Hons) is often a Scottish qualification. Indeed it is, in this example.

    U. of the Highlands and Islands is perfectly legit. in Britain. As such, its degrees should be "good" (in general terms) in the US. As with any degree, check first that it will get you exactly where you want to go, employment or further school-wise.

School is here: University of the Highlands and Islands

Looks like a great place to study...... golf. St Andrews is apparently nearby.

What serious DL or even day student has time for golf? I'm from England, originally - don't think I'd fit in too well in Scotland. Don't drink whisky, play golf or even like bagpipes very much. They do have some excellent schools, though. Come to think of it, I'm a misfit here in Canada. Don't eat back-bacon, hate maple syrup and hockey, don't drink beer ...and don't even say "eh" all that much. :jester:

American universities and employers typically treat them as the equivalent of an American BA.

It's a new university in Scotland, so most Americans will be unfamiliar with it.

    But yes, it's entirely legitimate.

Here's the British Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (the British equivalent of an American regional accreditor) listing for it:
