I think that this is "the list" of approved schools. I didn't look beyond the first page but I'm guessing that the school is on the list. While the school is likely to be legitimate I wonder about the quality. That's not a fair thing to say, I know, because I have no supporting data. It's just that sometimes it seems that everyone in India who want to go to college wants to do it anywhere in the world except India. Maybe this goes back to Rich Douglas' idea of developing a relationship with a school, a relationship that will assist you in your career and life. To my knowledge we've never had a member attend this school and so we're missing that kind of personal experience information.

Yes, it's a real university, about fifty years old, recognized by UGC, ACU, etc.

Thanks for looking into the validity of this school, too many fly by night schools in India so one cannot be too relaxed about it.

This University is bona-fide and has been discussed (mostly favourably) on the forum reasonably frequently - and as late as last month. It also has a US distance-education study centre, located in Solomons MD, site here: Page 1

Complaints? I think any school has some.

Rich: Actually, this is John Bear's advice, seen frequently in his books. But I agree with Kizmet's use of my use, if it's of any use.

The school in question is listed in the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook. It is a recognized university. Beyond that, consider posting to a site that caters to higher education in India, if such a thing exists. Or you could look at human capital/resource management sites to see if degrees from it are acceptable to employers.

When I peeked at this thread again I realized that somehow I hadn't included the link I promised. It's there now through the powers of Moderation but it's also here:

You right Mr. kizmet that "It's just that sometimes it seems that everyone in India who want to go to college wants to do it anywhere in the world except India". It is really an indication that the quality of education in india is even not patronize by their citizen because of low quality. A dissertation which sub standard quality and publish in non-reputable or low standard journal just to get the degree... based on the testimony of some.. even "Googling of fake universities and fake online journals.." Indian fake universities come first and fake sub standard journals..

Lot's of students, not so many slots? Like in China there are only so many slots in the main universities. Your scores might be good but not good enough. So you're forced to either 1) give up the goal 2) go private or 3) go international DL. The fact is that I don't understand this situation. It's complicated. It's easy to run off to google and find an article that seems to answer the question - I know that I've done it more times than I can count - But is that really the answer? Is this school in India just as good as, let's say, an average state university in the USA? Is it? How do we know? We don't. We guess. We hope. We depend on the integrity of a system that probably overwhelmed, underfunded and unlikely to see relief.

In this age of globalization, of DL degrees across continents, how do we measure equivalencies? I'm not just talking about some transcript evaluation service that will look at a syllabus and determine equivalency, I'm talking about real learning. Let's break it down to a real hardcore question: Is a Madjuri Kamaraj University (or a UNISA) PHD equivalent to a US PhD?
    I say yes.

Interesting, look forward to more comments about the place.

Indeed. Unfortunately, it's harder for students there to go private than it should be, because the Indian government erects high barriers to starting private universities there. Think of it as bureaucracy inaction.

    For Me, I'd Say NO!!!.

MADJURI KAMARAJ UNIVERSITY Ph.D cannot be treated with the same equivalency with US PhD. Where quality is somewhat dubious, even dissertation of graduates are not published in their ETD.

However for UNISA, Its Ph.D as it has a Royal Charter is equivalent to US PhD as some member of this forum have done it and able to teach in Canadian and US universities.. As oppose, thesis and dissetation can be view on their ETD as indication of its high standard and quality.

Yes, it is. Don't think it'll be for us foreigners, though. The University has run out of room for day-students and is opening something like 40,000 vacancies for distance-school. It says distance application forms are being sold(!) on campus and queries answered by megaphone.

I noticed another headline on the page that makes me hesitant to travel there:

    "Delhi - you'll get a water-quality check once in 27 years."

I think when they say application forms are being sold that's just the equivalent to American universities expecting a fee to be included with an application.

The megaphone thing, okay, that's kind of strange sounding. But if it works!

I guess I'm turning this thread into a generic discussion of India distance learning because here's an update from IGNOU

Distance Education Council of IGNOU dissolved - Indian Express
