I've decided on the possibility of going back to school. I had a major accident/injury and it severely impacted my momentum in my previous field of work. So now I have to start over.

I took a Compass test at a local community college and was a bit confused with the score results

    I scored

    99/99 Reading
    99/99 Writing

Both perfect scores from what I understand.

    In math I scored 64/99 Pre-algebra
only 27/99 Algebra. Quite poor. I have never been very good at math.

The local community college told me I do not have to take any reading classes. That I am already college level. However, they have placed me into writing 120. If I scored 99/99 in writing, doesn't that mean I am also at college level? Is the community college just trying to get me to pay and take classes I don't actually need? They really pushed taking writing classes for whatever reason even though I scored perfect in the Compass writing test.

Probably, most of us have been made to take one or more "basic" classes we didn't need. I know I have. I'm usually willing to "let a school slide" if it's only one course. They have a small point here, I suppose. Although you have demonstrated excellent native writing ability, they may be able to teach you something about essay formats, references, citations etc. that you'll need to complete projects in the rest of your classes.

You'll ace the course, for sure. Think of it as an easy GPA-builder.

Writing 120 is likely just your colleges version of Freshman English Comp. Just about every degree will require 6 credits (2 classes) in Basic English Comp (1 and 2 or EC 100/200 etc...) These are often used as pre-reqs for future writing intensive courses. Sounds like your in the right place.

I would see what the requirements are for Math, if they allow a CLEP like College math or College Algebra that might save you time and money...same for the CLEP College Comp....but it depends on what your comfortable with and what your school allows.
