    Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and been advised to seek help from here. Can u pls help?

I'm currently considering the online DBA Doctor of Business Administration degree from a DETC school, may be Columbia Southern University or California Intercontinental University. I got my MBA at a brick and mortar and RA school. Will a DBA from DETC school add any value to my resume? There are some RA online schools which I believe more preferable but the tuition fee of the 2 above schools are more affordable. I'm a foreigner and not really familiar with the NA/RA accreditation. Besides, I'm also wondering whether those above schools are real, recognized . I know there a lot of scam schools which dont exist. Thanks all

    Hi-
I can tell you that DETC schools do have to abide by strict business standards that the DETC sets forth. Whether the school is recognized, I would say it depends on what you plan to do with the degree. Will it add value to your resume, yes, it's better than not having the degree. In my opinion, DETC accreditation means the school is legitimate, but does not really speak to the program and the quality of the education. Regional accreditation, Department of Education approval are also other items to consider which will positively impact a school. Hope this helps.

Tell us what you actually plan to do with it, in other words, what you want to do but can't, but hope to be able to do once you have this degree. Then we can tell you whether one of these programs would meet your needs.

In the United States, DETC doctorates are not recognized by state universities for teaching purposes.

It depends a lot on the use you want to give to the DBA. DETC accreditation can be accepted in some countries as DETC is a recognized American accreditation agency.

I don't think the DBA from a DETC can't hurt but if you are looking for a resume booster, there are a lot of more cost effective credentials that you can get such as CFA, CPA, PMP, etc. I think it is safe to say that an employer would be a lot more impressed with a CFA than with a DBA from a low tier DETC internet school.

If you are looking for a DBA to teach on the side, you should consult your local Universities and ask if a DETC school would allow you to teach at the University level.

If money is a concern, I would look into PhD programs offered from India or South Africa from government recognized schools like UNISA. These programs might have more utility than DETC approved internet schools.

I know a person that got a DBA from a DETC school in Canada, he is a consultant, entrepeneur and trainer and the DBA helps him to get credibility as he can introduce himself as "Dr".

NARIC UK - will not evaluate DETC degrees as equivalent to UK University degrees.

This may be also correct for NARIC network in many countries.

Professional Institutes in UK use NARIC to provide equivalency of degree for people who are trying to get registered as Chartered professionals.
They usually offered to write Thesis or do a project as mature adult rout as the DETC accredited degrees are not evaluated by NARIC, they simply refuse evaluate them.
This can be also a case with other evaluation agencies working with ministries of education of different countries.

NARIC evaluates only US RA accredited degrees as equivalent to UK Degrees.

Do you have a source for this? NARIC reviews degrees/credentials on a case by case basis and their website makes no mention of DETC or CHEA.

According to their website, "The identification of an overseas qualification will be made in the context of its native education system. The criteria UK NARIC uses in assessing a qualification include:

    • 1. an examination of the status of the awarding institution, i.e. whether it is accredited/recognised in the country of origin
    • 2. an examination of the standing of the qualification within the country's education system, i.e. whether it constitutes a national standard and/or forms part of the national qualifications framework / national education system"*

It would seem that DETC would meet these two requirements.

*In full disclosure, I trucated the list to the first two points because they were the most relevant to this discussion.
