So I was looking into different graduate programs (just out of curiosity) and I noticed AMU is dual accredited by HLC and DETC and I can't remember seeing a college/ university with more than one accreditation.

Whats your take on this? Is this some form of dual NA/RA accreditation or what?

In APUS' case, they were accredited by DETC first (in 1995) and then HLC later (in 2006). Another example is Global University, initially accredited by DECT in 1977, then by HLC in 2010. There are probably others that followed this pattern but those are the only two that come to mind. Oh and WGU.

Ellis University is RA and NA (DETC), but their RA status is literally day to day. Ellis only recently obtained DETC accreditation and likely did so as a hedge against losing their regional accreditation.

    Hi

Western Governors' University also has dual accreditation: RA (North West Commission) and NA (DETC). In addition, many of their programs are accredited by professional bodies. Oops - sorry. Just realized, Emmzee already mentioned WGU. (Go back to sleep, Johann!)

Western Governer's University used to be simultaneously accredited by... EVERYBODY!!!!

At one point in time they held accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and finally the Distance Education and Training Counsel, I repeat, SIMULTANEOUSLY!!!!

The high school and the career school are RA. From the PF website:

"Penn Foster Career School is accredited for non-degree granting postsecondary diploma programs by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. 215-662-5603 css-msa.org.

Penn Foster High School is accredited for grades 9 through adult by the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, 3624 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA. 215-662-5603 css-msa.org.

Penn Foster Career School and Penn Foster High School are accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency.

The Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council is also a recognized member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Penn Foster Career School and Penn Foster High School are licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools"

Don't forget Western Governors University and Ellis College. You might also check Westwood College (NA through ACCSCT) and find out whether their bid for RA through NCA ever came to fruition. And the University of Advancing Technology might also be RA/NA.

Penn Foster College, however, is only DETC accredited.

Not a RA /NA arrangement, but California Miramar University has dual national accreditation … DETC and ACICS.

With Utah based WGUs initial founding by 19-governors; do you think the amount of political influence /pressure had anything to do with its peculiarity of being the only university, and non-traditional at that, to receive regional accreditation from four regional accrediting commissions? How about the interregional accrediting committee (IRAC) made up of sixteen representatives from four regional accreditation agencies that, BTW, disbanded after gaining accreditation candidacy for WGU (?). If I recall correctly, David Boyd (Taft University) believed that IRAC was needed as no individual RA agency was at ease in initially accrediting WGU …

I personally know people who are very happy that such universities and colleges exist.

They serve as a bridge for these who hold NA degrees and would like to transfer credit or earn a higher degree from an RA university.

I still maintain that DETC accreditation is really good for DL providers and students, the methods are effective, I compared some classes from RA schools that offer DL and for me DETC schools have better material for home learner.
