Ellis University is NOT LEGIT. DO NOT fall into their trap. My wife started a degree with them and paid for each class as she went. They "offered" her opportunity grants each month, which seemed reasonable at first. She then took a two month break to get married and they cancelled the grants resulting in a bill of over $800. Once we got married she wanted to finish up her degree, but she found out that they discontinued her online major without any notification. Its been another 2 months fighting to transfer her credits to a legit school and now they have turned us into a collection agency. WOW! This does not seem right... We never received any bills or notification with due dates for the balance. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ELLIS TO ANYONE. THEY CAN NOT BE TRUSTED!!

Outrageous behavior by Ellis. I had been impressed that they routinely have posted their complete federal and state income tax returns on line (http://www.ellis.edu/documents/2008_2009_Federal990_000.pdf). Among other things, the return lists the home addresses of all the officers and trustees. In my books on effective complaining, I recommend, in severe circumstances, the technique of writing to the officers at home, to explain your situation. Odds are, none of them will know about your wife's situation, and one or more might be sufficiently distressed to intervene.

That's not especially generous of Ellis though. Nearly every 501(c)(3) is required to produce their Form 990 to any citizen who asks. There are even sites such as Foundation Center that aggregate and archive Forms 990 for review by anyone who is interested.
