I received a question in my email this morning from a student who wanted to know "is there a list of regionally accredited online colleges that accept (routinely) nationally accredited degrees and credits." This student has a NA associates and wants to trade up to a RA bachelors. I thought if such a list existed it might be archived here ... I know of a few RA schools that have "common acceptance" for nationally accredited colleges but not many. Any advice you could give would be passed on to this student.

There is the HETA directory. "HETA is a Web-based directory of colleges and universities that is open to all institutions that are accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the United States Department of Education (USDE). Membership in HETA is entirely voluntary. HETA is not intended to and will not constrain institutional freedom or prerogatives with respect to acceptance of transfer credit."

Excelsior College is liberal in regards to acceptance of NA credits. Your students can also consider The American Public University System. APUS is both regionally and nationally accredited.

I'll second APUS (AMU/APU). They accepted my DETC Bachelor's for graduate admission without any question. http://www.apus.edu/

    There is also WGU. http://www.wgu.edu/

Both of those schools are regionally and DETC accredited. I imagine that they would also recognize other NA credit as well.

Is your college listed with ACE and have their courses evaluated for credit recomendation by ACE.

The American Council on Education's College Credit Recommendation Service (CREDIT) connects workplace learning with colleges and universities by helping adults gain access to academic credit for formal courses and examinations taken outside traditional degree programs.

For decades, colleges and universities have trusted ACE to provide reliable course equivalency information to facilitate credit award decisions. Participating organizations include corporations, professional and volunteer associations, schools, training suppliers, labor unions and government agencies, with courses from Arabic to Waste Management.

CREDIT provides solutions for adult learner, workplace, and higher education challenges.

Long list of RA state universities.

THE ACE CREDIT COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY NETWORK

Members of the CREDIT Network use the National Guide, the Military Guide, and our transcripts to determine where your training may fit into degree programs; the structure of a degree program or departmental regulations may affect acceptance of CREDIT recommendations.

The colleges and universities listed are those who actively support and connect the ACE credit recommendations by helping adults use them in certificate or degree programs.

Go to ACE web site and locate:

    Penn Foster College

Then look at all the classes Penn Foster had evaluated by ACE

Select a class and click on it:

Here is one such evaluation of class.

    Advanced Accounting
    (Formerly: (Formerly Managerial Accounting))

Date range in which the course/exam was completed:

    Credit Type: Course
    ACE Course Number: 0116
    Organization: Penn Foster Career School
    Location: Self-study.
    Dates Offered: 12/1/2000 - Present
Description: The student will be able to apply theory and practice issues in income and value measurement and report for multi-corporate enterprises and business combinations.
Credit Recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate or upper division baccalaureate degree category, 3 semester hours in Advanced Accounting (12/00).

Liberty accepts NA bachelor degrees to get into their masters programs, so I imagine (but am not 100% sure) that they will also accept NA associate degrees into their bachelors.

All it says on thier course transfer page is "Courses must be accredited through an accrediting body that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Higher Education."

    http://www.luonline.com/index.cfm?PID=14344

Note that there are some other requirements/stipulations there.

For the confirmation, yes they do. They even allow NA credits to be transfer into their Master degrees.

Excelsior college seems to accept NA accredits as long as the program is only RA accredited. If the program ABET accredited or other specialty accreditation then they will usually accept credits from the same type of accreditation i.e ABET or other professional or specialty.

I know many successful transfers from NA colleges to Western Governors University.
Its a unique school providing competency based credit and degree. My youngest sons teacher got her AS degree and some other NA credit transfered to WGU, she earned Bachelors degree and teacher credential from WGU. Now she is pursuing Masters degree in State University locally.

Excelsior is less lenient with its business degrees and even less so with it's technology programs. For transferring business credits, they are more willing to accept NA courses for transfer before one is enrolled. Once in the program, they are less likely to do so unless the courses are ACE approved. The strange aspect about this policy is that Excelsior will consider ACE approved non-accredited training courses for transfer but places greater restrictions on NA non ACE approved business credits. Anyone else see this or am I wrong?

Something to consider if a person wishes transfer NA ACE approved courses for upper/advanced level credit ." Some credit recommended as upper level by ACE may not apply as advanced-level credit toward your business degree
    ( Page 30 )."

    https://www.excelsior.edu/Excelsior_College/Publications/Business_Catalog.pdf

Ok. Here's the document that references what I discussed above. "Courses completed at non-regionally accredited institutions after a student has enrolled in Excelsior College will not be applied to degree requirements" ( Page 28-29 ) They'll approve up to 25 percent of the total amount of credits needed for your degree. For example, if your degree program is 120 credits, they may accept 30 NA credits for transfer. Now you need to complete the NA ( non ACE approved ) business courses before you enroll.

It appears that Nationally accredited ACE approved lower level business courses are good to transfer with no fee for assessment. Upper level NA ( ACE Approved) courses appear be restricted.

    Baccalaureate Business Degrees
The bachelor's degree programs in business are recognized by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), 11257 Strang Line Rd., Lexena, Kansas 66215, 913-631-3009. Excelsior College is the only solely online institution to receive this recognition.

Because of this recognition the transfer credit from other then RA and non IACBE classes is limited.

    For the same reason

Electronic Engineering Technology and Nuclear Engineering Technology -- Baccalaureate Degrees
The baccalaureate degree programs in electronics engineering technology and nuclear engineering technology are accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore, MD 21202-4012 – telephone: (410) 347-7700. The Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET is a specialized accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).

Non ABET accredited , NA credit can't be accepted.

    Here are a few:

    BELLEVUE UNIVERSITY (ONLINE)
    LIBERTY UNIVERSITY (ONLINE)
    GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY (ONLINE)
UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX (ONLINE & some campuses are available)
    KEISER UNIVERSITY (ONLINE & CAMPUS)
    CARLOS ALBIZU UNIVERSITY (MIAMI)

NORTHCENTRAL UNIVERSITY (the one in AZ, because there is another one too) (ONLINE)

UNION INSTITUTE & UNIVERSITY (ONLINE & AND ON CAMPUS)
FLORIDA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (FIT) (ONLINE)

I am POSITIVE there are more, but it takes research. I cant stand when ppl make it seem like their life is over because they didn't do their undergrad at an RA school. Just do research. Though you are restricted, you CAN got to an RA school.

The issue is not always NA vs RA.

A lot of programs in RA universities are also Professionally or Specialty accredited.
Depends on a program accreditation criteria they simply can't transfer non PA credit in to PA program.

For example transfer credit in to ABET accredited degree program. They want similar Abet accrediting group credit.

So the same University may offer an alternative and lets say instead of ABET accredited degree program allow NA transfer credit in to a Business or non ABET program.

I know people who successfully transferred credit from NA program in to BALS or other non PA accredited programs.

Just another factor that needs to be taken in to account.

    One place to look is the HETA directory on the CHEA website. This is a list of schools that are willing to look at credits, courses, and degrees from schools that are accredited by recognized accreditors other than the Regional Accreditors. This includes NA schools. It is not a promise or requirement that these schools will, but they are open to it. The website is;

I would say that FIT would have the best rep. As for tuition, you may have to do some homework yourself to get the current figures.
