I can really use some advice. My employer (to be) is not accepting my associate degree. They stating that it is not accredited by one of the following agencies:

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
Association of Independent Colleges and Schools
Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
New England Association of Colleges and Schools
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
Northwest Association of Colleges and Schools
National Association of Trade and Technical Schools
Western Association of Colleges and Schools

Now, the college that I graduated is Globe Institute of Technology is located in NY City and is accredited by New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education.

My question is there anything I can do to have them accept my AS degree? What are my options?

My other problem with my employer is that they will not accept my foreign high school diploma even though I do have it have professionally translated and notarized. Are there any options here?

They basically force me to take GED test. I’m not really comfortable taking it as it is been a while since I finish high school.

I would appreciate any input regarding this mater.

    TIA

    Alex

Go to the US Department of Education website or the CHEA and show them that the degree from the New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education is recognized.

    Best of Luck.

I'm sorry but I'm not following you. They know that my college is accredited by New York State Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education. They will not accept it unless it accredited by one of the agencies from the list in my original post.

Well, did they give you a reason why? The list you indicated are agencies recognized by the Dept of Education and the CHEA, Hence, NYSBR fall under this recognition as the other ones you mention. I guess, this may be a case of education discrimination.

I agree with you regarding education discrimination but my future employer is a government agency. It is almost impossible to proof anything to these people. They just don’t care much. Strictly by the book.

First post you indicated that was not accredited and then you indicated that they know is accredited, so which one is it?, you need to have a why not they would not accept it.

I would say is more of a ignorance that leads to involuntary discrimination. But you can prove your case with information and diplomacy.

The HR person went on line to check the accreditation from my college and said they would not accept it. Even though she knew it is from NYS education department. The list above are they the only agency that they will recognize.

Definitely, you will need to provided this HR person this information so she/he can understand that she/he is making an error. It would be to your advantage to get familiar with the CHEA and US DEPT of Education site. You can beat this, but you will need to be arm with the information.

Don't be satisfied by what one person in HR says. Your Department should have a complaints Department or Department Director you could direct this problem to. Most government agencies give you the right to appeal decisions. It doesn't hurt to try.

I work for State government and they recognize any degree recognized by the USDOE and CHEA.

What are their requirements? Isn't the employer’s choice? Some companies may require an AACSB MBA or a ABET BSEE degree. Is that degree discrimination?

Job requirement is High school or GED. My school diploma is from another country and my AS degree has issues listed above. Thats why they want me to take GED. I do not want to loose my AS just like that.

By the way my college is listed on USDOE website but I can not find it on CHEA.

That would be I believe, because it appears to be an "unaccredited-but-state-approved" school. Also the reason its a .org instead of .edu I guess. Also (living in China and working with students who plan to study abroad), the very prominent links in TWO places on every page to switch it to chinese/korean/japanese suggests to me they are trying to "sucker in" asians that do not understand accreditation in the USA. But, they ARE a legal state authorized school, and can help people get student visa's to the US, which is presumably their main game. They don't even require a TOEFL, instead are willing to just test you themselves! (you can make your own rules when you are unaccredited I suppose.) I wonder at the rigor of such testing when you show up with cash in hand to study, would they really want to turn you away? I can't imagine it would be comparable. Regardless, this job requires an RA degree, and I also would suggest obtaining a new degree from a more respectable institution. When we are helping students pick their US/Canadian Uni, I would certainly tell any student to not go here, and attend somewhere else. I particular like this excerpt:
This really says to me their primary business is selling foreigners visas to the USA, education (whatever that may constitute there) is secondary/a necessary evil in the student visa biz.

NY state is the only state in US that is recognized by DoE as accrediting agency. So this is State Approved and Nationally Accredited degree.
A friend of my applied to department of corrections to work as a corrections officer and I think this is under sheriff as well.

He run in to the same issue.
He ended up getting US High School diploma from on line provider.
This was very fast. The school was accepted by the Sheriff department and he got to continue the process of comprehensive physical exam and mental etc.
It took another 6 months before he was sent to the academy.
The degree was a plus but not needed.
He tried to fight the degree rules and because his degreed was foreign they didn't care, only RA degree was recognized and the same for his high school diploma.

Earning High school diploma in his case Continental Academy - 450 USD.
He did it on line in a month, they accepted some of his high school credit transfer 4 out of 18 required classes. He didn't remember and actually didn't know US history etc so after the program he learned a lot about US history and US literature.
Each class can be completed in a day by educated degree adult.
The 5 to 10 assignments are required per class. All on line any time.
Go for their EAGLE program and you in a month will have a SACS accredited US High School Diploma. The month will pass anyway.

    Two thoughts:

    1. See if you can get any RA institution to accept the educational credentials as admission, preferably in the local are for which you want to work. You might also see if one of the big three will accept the credits and can issue another degree with minimal work.

    2. Take the GED. Sometimes it is easier to deal with bureaucratic requirements by just meeting them and moving on. It is also less stress and demonstrates to the agency that you are serious about meeting their standards.

If you are actually talking about Global Business Institute it is accredited by ACICS.

Thanks for all the ideas so far. I made some printouts from USDOE website and will try to convince HR to accept my AS degree.

If not is there any way I can validate my foreign school diploma? I already have it professionally translated and notarized.
