I was reading through Online Degree Reviews. org and found this under Warren National University. ( I am quoting Harry, I hope he is ok with it)

The Higher Learning Commission review team is making a site visit to Warren National University on October 13, 2008. This review is to determine the schools qualification for initial candidacy.

    Has anyone heard this?

hopefully they won't make it. But if they do, one would hope it will only be for students going forward and won't include students prior to recieving acceptance...

    Comment Period

I recall there is a comment period where the public can express their opinion about a university. Does anyone have a link to how I would go about doing that?

If WNU goes through the accreditation process and earns it, good for them. If not, then you know it is not up to the NCAs standards. It is very ill willed to wish that a school cannot better itself and hope for failure. Speaks poorly of the human spirit.

I don't agree with that. KW/WNU has been devious at best about their standards. The "school" has moved on various occasions to avoid becoming accredited.

There ton's of evidence out there that there was little to no work required to recieve one of their so called "degrees" they pray on international students that have litttle to know idea of how us accreditation works. I am truly hoping that they don't get recognized and that they leave the educational world.

But if they go get recognized then good for them, though I doubt it will happen.

What exactly does this mean? I am not really familiar with the process or the time lines. WNU has applied and is now a candidate. How long does it take for the accrediting body to make a decision?

Is any one familiar enough with this to comment?

Turtle: "How long does it take for the accrediting body to make a decision?"

With North Central, typically 1 to 2 years for "Candidacy" and another year or two for accreditation. But there is a wide range. Even though North Central's own rules specified no more than six years, in the case of what is now Union Institute and University, after six years of candidacy, the deadlines were extended, and the process took an additional three years.

Accreditation is only for students going forward, never for students prior to receiving acceptance.

WNU has applied, but is technically not yet a "candidate". A school has to jump through some hoops just to receive official "candidate" status, and that hasn't happened yet. The HLC site visit, scheduled for 10/13/08, will help HLC to determine if WNU is an acceptable "candidate".

It's an important distinction, because I understand that a school qualifies for USDoE recognition once it is an official "candidate" with a recognized agency. WNU isn't there yet.
Regional and professional accreditors can and do grant accreditation retroactively, but they never seem to do so for more than 1 or 2 years in the past.

For example, SACS accredited Valdosta Technical College in December 2007, retroactive to January 1, 2007. ABET accredited the engineering program at Smith College in late 2005, and the accreditation was retroactive to cover students in two previous graduating classes.

The problem I have is that if WNU becomes accredited then there's close to 30,000 degrees out in the public bestowed by KWU that were for the most part grossly substandard. WNU has already publically stated that these alumni would be able to get diplomas updated to read Warren National University. Presumably, if employers called the accredited WNU to verify the degree then they would receive a positive verification. In my opinion this problem is great enough that accreditation should be denied rather than allow this to occur. There are other less severe solutions but, my fear is that no solution will be implemented.

not defending WNU in any way. i have no vested interest. i do think that re-issue of diplomas should not happen and that accreditation status for degrees should not go back more than 2 or 3 years at best especially being that KWU/WNU operated without any oversight from Wyoming. my opinion still rest with whatever the NCA finds. i don't know anything about the WNU programs.

    No, on two fronts.

First, the key isn't when the student is accepted. Rather, it is when the student is graduated vis a vis the school's accreditation date. A student admitted prior to accreditation, but graduated after accreditation, graduates with a degree from an accredited school.

Second, students graduating from still-not-accredited schools--but whose schools go on subsequently to become accredited--are often treated as if they graduated from accredited schools. Not universally, of course, but routinely. It is one thing to check to see if someone's degree comes from an accredited school. It is another thing entirely to compare that person's graduation date with the school's candidacy or accreditation date. And it is something even further to care--very rare.

If, somehow, Warren National becomes a candidae for accreditation, I certainly hope some firewall is put up to separate WN graduates from its extremely unaccredited predecessor, Kennedy-Western "University."
