CBS 42 Investigates: Professors' questionable credentials

One of Baylor University's top educators -- Anne Grinols -- earned her PhD in Business Administration at Kennedy Western University -- a school the state of Texas doesn't recognize.

Karen Pickard is the Assistant Professor for Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Her Masters in Healthcare Administration came from Kennedy Western, too.

A response from the employers is here:

Also, there is a video segment in the upper right hand corner, runs about 6 minutes on the investigation.

"Michael Ringer is a credential verifier. He makes sure college degrees are legitimate. Some aren't." - Anyone heard of this guy?

I remember a year or two back, we had a "debate" on this discussion board about accreditation in the US and the pros and cons of having national standards set by the USDOE. It reminds of comments made about keeping government out of the accreditation process and that if the USDOE changed the accreditation process then it would result in what I see happening in Texas. If we had USDOE accrediting standards across the board for all schools to follow, then there would be none of this mine is better than yours or your degree is fake becasue my state said so.

The politician's comments about distance/online degrees shows his ignorance about online education.

I've found that's one of the dangers of media sources that do stories on degree mills; the tendency of of politicians and even school administrators to label DL as a blanket scam.

I don't think it is fair of this report to group California Coast University with Kennedy Western. I know that CCU was unaccredited when "lawmakers hear about California Coast University", but CCU is accredited now, and has always required students to do course work in order to earn a degree. Texas is supposedly in the process of putting an asterisk next to the CCU entry on their "unapproved" list to indicate CCU degrees earned after a certain date are accredited by the DETC.

I can understand a state law which considers non-accredited degrees to be "fraudulent and substandard", but not when they come from a school accredited by a body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    In recent years, anyway.

It was required to do a lot of work when I was in their program (2001 - 2003). I had to retake two classes for the MBA program to get my GPA up to a 3.08 to pass the program.
