I used to say that one important difference in higher education between the U.S. and other countries is that in the U.S. accreditation is privately administered. I think it's clear now that this is no longer the case.

Given that this has been done at the instigation of his Education secretary, does anyone still think that Bush is still a conservative? It's not enough that he's spent more than every other administration in history combined while conducting the most disastrous foreign policy and military policy since James Madison, now he has to screw up higher education on his way out the door? :(

Steve, you know I love you buddy and have highest of respect for you. But I am happy to hear the the USDOE is giving the WACS hell. That agency thinks their fecal matter is gold. This is one of the reason I would like to see national accreditation standards established and each region or state would have to follow those standards. That would help with transfers of credits being denied, etc.

BTW MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AN YOURS!!

Fair enough, but I'm thinking about the long term, when accreditation of higher education has been messed up from political interference. For example, if the door is open to that sort of meddling, then how long does TRACS stay approved should a liberal be in the White House?

Dennis R comented on another chanel

But I also remember something about an issue with an university \in Hawaii and Georgia

    So Renne supplied this.

Funny how this all happens right on the heels of AALE's accreditation of the American University for Humanities Tbilisi College Campus, in the Republic of Georgia. The article described this as attracting "a frenzy of speculation," referencing the earlier article on that topic.http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2006/08/29/tbilisi

So DETC got approved without conditions and they can now offer professional doctorates. WASC did not get approved without conditions.

I find this to be interesting
