Burnett International University School of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in order to provide knowledge and training in the art of Medicine and in the Nursing Care. This University runs a four-year graduate medical program for now, with the objective of providing other fields such as Dentistry, Nursing, Mental Health, Pharmacy, Optometry and Veterinary Schools. It claims :
Burnett International University is publicly recognized & chartered by the Government of Haiti. This charter grants the BIU the right to confer a Universitary degree to its graduates. Now, both the Minister of Education and the Minister of Public Health are already evaluated the BIU and are now preparing the Letter of accreditation so that BIU will be very soon listed in WHO and ECFMG.

I may be wrong, this is just an opinion.
At this time they are not GAAP.

The tales about preparation of letters and posuble inclussion in the UNESCO registry were promissed by SRU for couple of years and never realized.

I also read elsewere that the name is a new name of older university that failed.

Lerner , thanks for replying. Are they legally recognized by Haiti to authorize degrees? Given that Haiti doesn't have the blanket rejection given to all programs that the ODA gives to St. Kitts for example and it is a recognized nation wouldn't that make it GAAP?
I understand what you're saying-preparing letters for the WHO and UNESCO and other accredited agencies is often promissed by degree mills and never happens. But would the fact that the Haitian Education Ministry recognizes them provide any creditabilty?

I would like to think if the Haitian Ministry of Education recognizes them, it should be sufficient enough to be recognized. Respectfully, why do we allow a few people to make decisions for us what GAAP is or what it is not. Acreditation in the United States is suppose to be voluntary process anyway.

An American university has the right to say if they want to become accredited or not. Accreditation isn't a product of the government. We have turned this whole concept of GAAP into a bureaucracy in of itself! Who is going to say if it is recognized by UNESCO and WHO, it isn't good enough?

Same kind of nonsense that was spread by the academic frauds that have been arrested in Spokane, Washington when they were claiming that St. Regis University was fully recognized by Liberia. There were many people that lost their jobs and ruined their reputation by purchasing degrees from that fraudulent operation. Don't listen to James. He sounds just like those other academic frauds that are now facing criminal charges. Don't risk your reputation, stay away from these questionable places or you could be very sorry.

Bill, I'll take your advice. You turned out to be right on MUA (the Medical U. of the Americas.) Their Ph.D and nursing programs are gone. This one seems similiar.

In general I agree, although I'm not usually any more impressed with government efficiency overseas than I am here in the U.S.

If this is the project I remember reading about when I was in South Florida, it's a serious effort started by Haitians living in Fort Lauderdale, not a St. Regis style exploitation of a foreign ministry that isn't paying enough attention.

However, James, you should know that the UNESCO and WHO lists are known for being open lists with no guarantee of being real. There's all too much prejudice against higher education from the developing world, and I'm glad you don't share it, but rejecting the authority of those lists isn't unreasonable.
