Are Honors for Physicians the New Political Diploma Mill?

I've recently been offered much the same sort of thing (albeit not Physician of the Year) from the RNC. This appears to be the latest scheme by the Republicans to raise money. If you google it, you will find many people have been offered these "awards" from them.

Lest I let the Democrats off the hook, I would not be at all surprised if they do the same sort of thing (although this particular trick seems to have originated with Delay).

And, yes, Virginia, politicians are truly a sleazy bunch.

As much as I would love to blame the Republicans for this one, in good conscience I can not. Giving awards in exchange for donations is a very old and non-partisan practice that has been used to raise funds by non-profit organizations for a long time. The Red Cross, the MDA, United Way, the YMCA among others have engaged in this kind of behavior for ever. And let’s not get into the legitimate universities that have granted honorary degrees in exchange for substantial donations. Is this kind of thing wrong? Of course it is. Is it out of the ordinary? I think not.
