A U.S. State Dept. official sent the following to me. It is from an Op-Ed piece concerning Liberia, the election, and the status of women in that country. I choose to post it here, rather than in the Off-topic discussions forum.

It appears that the original piece (which differs slightly from what I was sent) was published in the N.Y. Times; it was also printed in the International Herald Tribune. I've left out some of the text for the sake of copyright issues, but I think the wide (free) availability of the full text on the web and a number of other factors make this a circumstance in which fair use provisions apply. The text I was sent (included here) differs very slightly from the Trib's version.

The major players in world politics--Indira Ghandi, Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, Mary Robinson, et. al.--have all done wonderful jobs as leaders of their respective countries. The only major exception is Benazir Bhutto.

A lot of people haven't realized that the luxury of the west exist to a large extent by exploiting poor countries or colonies.

We tend to dismiss these people as stupid but have grasp the level of wrong doing by the west.

Even todays cheap goods come from exploited labor in other countries.

A lot of people haven't realized that when the furniture salesman on the television says, "There's absolutely no finance charge!" this just means that the profit from the (prospective)financing has been built into the base cost of the item.

By definition, half the people are below average intelligence. They don't even read newspapers. You thought that they might understand globalization?

The article reminded me of the sad polygamy cults in Utah and how the women are treated in those cults. Very sad and disgusting that they can get away with treating a large part of the population that way.

I have no doubts that the women of Africa have been, and will continue to be, Africa's long-term, moral, economic and humane saviors.

Would that the women of the West and the USA, would similarly work to save us from the corrupt, egomaniacal politics of the male species here - and in other developed lands - where we individually throw away, daily, the equivalent of food which can feed an entire Liberian village for weeks.

It is also telling that the mostly boys/young men followers of diploma-mill-wielding "George Weah" threatened "No Weah, No Peace" - to confound the progress of the brilliant, Harvard-educated Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf.

Higher education - of the accredited and legitimate variety - has its merits.

Thanks, Galanga, for a great post.

What is your definition of "exploit" in this context?

All one need to do is find out to what societies these ladies belonged, yes the societies that groom their members to such positions, such as Comte of foreign affairs, different branches of

And who is really pooling the strings.

Willie Foreign Minister Golda was chosen by her supporters in the secret society in USA to lead the nation of Israel as prime minister, the plan was to assassin the the prime minister Eshkol.

i]this is from a word document I got long time ego as attachement from a friend[/i]

    Rabin became a target later.

This scenario was to repeat in US but failed, when Regen was almost assassinated.

    And don't forget JFK.

Any way other ladies have their share in such mysteries.

Don't expect me to prove this

Maybe this tred should move to political discussions?

    Hi Jimmy:

This is yet another peddling of originally Okhrana-inspired conspiracy theories, you know, the Jews, the Masons, the Uruguayans, the pretzel-makers. This is an ugly kind of thought and the idea that THEY would kill Lerner if he said what he knew is perfectly ridiculous.

It has exactly nothing to do with Liberia or your extension of the discussion to female leaders in general.

Now, Jimmy, if you can haul this um tread kicing end scriming bekk to Liberia or women leaders or something within the realm of normal cognition as you and I and the rest of this earthbound race know it, well, hats off to you.

    Good luck. You'll need it.

I can see it all now in the headlines. "Learner (aka Lerner) assinated by worldwide global conspirator organization after exposing worldwide global conspirator organization for being the worldwide global conspirator organization that likes to assinate people that exposes the worldwide global conspirator organization."

    To Lerner/Learner:

    Please!

Here, and in every thread or post, when you quote or use something that is not originally yours, always give credit and cite your source(s). ALWAYS!

At the very elementary level, that means, for example, including Author's Name, Date, Title, Magazine/Journal/Book/Web, etc.

And for heaven's sake, why turn a good thread by galanga, on Africa, women, education, development, etc. into a conspiratorial rant against a sovereign state, Israel?

Putting the thread back on track (I hope) ......

The good thing about the recent defeat, at the electoral polls, of "I am well-educated," politician wanna-be, soccer wizard, George Weah, is that the entire continent of Africa and beyond, has been made aware that many people in high and low places hold fake and fraudulent diploma mill "degrees."

Most citizens of Weah's country, Liberia, have demonstrated that they would rather respect and have as their leaders, holders of valid, legitimate, accredited higher education credentials. First-ever elected African woman President, Mrs. Johnson-Sirleaf, is a Harvard University graduate. Weah's bogus and worthless diploma mill claims was part of his downfall. Thank goodness, for that.

An entire continent has been made aware of the dishonesty and deceit of the mostly internet-driven, billion-dollar, diploma mill and substandard "school" enterprise.

If (the mostly-male) authorities in most African countries ever got to the point of forcefully and freely educatiing girls and women as they do boys and men, the roots of massive and empowering societal development would have been sowed for ages.

That will be a very good thing.

    Newbies: Please note:

Accept nothing but a properly, legitimate, USDoE and/or CHEA-recognized, accredited higher education, in the US and mGAAP foreign equivalents. The reason(s) for pursuing an unaccredited education are whittling down, by the day, to near-zero. You can always find an accredited alternative to fit your budget or career goals.

Also, support (consider donating to) charity-driven, mostly non-governmental efforts to educate girls and women in Africa and developing countries.

Thanks, again, galanga, for a good thread.

    :)

Perhaps I should explain about the word "assinate"? Sorry that I can't or it might violate the TOS because it has something to do with donkeys.

Some silly people probably thought that I just misspelled ass-ass-inate but I hope they're straightened out now. (Okay so it was really a misspelling but don't tell anyone.)

    Jake,

It is a nice sentiment you propose above, but I believe the reality is closer to what Galanga's quoted article says; the voice of the downtrodden women in Liberia outvoted George Weah's presumably mostly male supporters.

Either way the hope must be that Liberia emerges from the mess it is currently in.

    Peace,

    Dave C.
