I recently been informed that Columbus University (www.columbus.edu) is now GAAP accredited and licensed by the Panamanian government. (http://www.pa/educa/index.html#privadas) Is there any truth to this? Is it the same school as the one in Mississippi?

I know this questions may sound strange for some of you but this is part of some research I am doing.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me on this.

"GAAP" is a concept, not a process. There is no such thing as "GAAP Accredited."

Columbus has operated as an unaccredited school (degree mill, really). It isn't clear from the link you provided whether or not this has changed vis a vis Panama, but it sounds like either (a) it is B.S. or (b) they've "rented" approval like we've seen elsewhere. Neither would do them (or their students/graduates) well when it comes to having degrees recognized.

Legitimate schools don't have to do this kind of thing.

    wrong

There is a Columbus University in Panama and there has been for years, its been accredited in panama for years.

Just because there was or is a degree mill in the USA with that name, does not make all of them a degree mill.

    Thanks for the clarification, bullet.

The "Columbus" listed on the Panama site seems clearly to be different from the one in Mississippi with the dreadful WAUC accreditation. Different URL.

But here's a new mystery: the Columbus on the Panama site has a web site "under construction" which says "Columbus University, Panama and Canada."

I can find no evidence of them in Canada.

    Hey Doc

    Hi Doc,

My wife and I met in medical school in Panama, at Columbus University and I left behind some friends there that eventually graduated (many moons ago).

I know the university very well, I know the owner (or maybe she is the former owner; of the David, Chiriqui Campus).... what I don't know is if they have expanded or were sold to a canadian group. I sincerely doubt they have expanded, so maybe they were bought by a canadian group.

Oops, my bad. Thought the Mississippi Columbus had opened up a post office box in Panama. Thanks!

    Hey Doc D:

My comments were not directed towards your comments; my comments were in general.

Wonderful responses, Thank you so much Rich, Bala, and Dr. Bear. I am trying to compile a list of degree completion distance schools for people that dropped out of law school. I am trying to give the benefit of the doubt to those programs that are in a grey area. But to be included in the list the Juris Doctor or Executive Juris Doctor must be state approved, state licenced, or accredited. So, whenever in doubt I come to the experts at DegreeInfo.

    Thanks Again!

Bullet says: If you are constructing a list for the purpose above, I don't know that Columbus University in Panama will be of service. I say this because they are a Panamanian School and if I recall, the Law program is based on the laws of Panama. Would a Law program like this be accpetable in the United States, even if recognized in Panama?

Le hago la observacion por si acaso, ok?

    Be well.

Gracias por la observacion Dr. Bullet.

However, as of now I am only working with schools in the United States. Unfortunatelly, I have not been able to locate any Law Schools offering degree completion legal programs outside the state of California that meet the above mention criteria. I anyone knows of any alternatives, your suggestions will be appreciated.

Gracias y que dios los bendiga.

    comprendo

Corrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrecto, mi comandante en jefe de las fuerzas educadas!

Working with usa schools makes allot of sense.

I am still unaware if a foreign trained attorney (abogado) could eventually practice law in the usa?

and by the way, one day maybe, just maybe I may be a doctor...........right now, I am still as always and simply:
