What is this? And how does it compare to the DETC?

Also, what does it take for a DETC school to get dropped.

    Thanks

    Bill:)

The USDLA is a trade association for schools offering distance learning. Any school can join.

The USDLA is not a recognized accreditor. While they're beginning to develop their own accreditation program (taking over GATE), I doubt if it will be intended for degree recognition (and, thus, for recognition by CHEA and/or the USDoE). Rather, consider it to be similar to an industry certification, like PMI or CMM. I hope they'll choose to accredited only those schools already accredited by a recognized agency, if only to cut down on possible mis-use of their accreditation.

As for DETC, why don't you direct your question to them? The generic, bland answer is that a school can lose its accreditation for not continuing to meet DETC accreditation standards. (The school can also opt out of DETC). But to what extent the school has to drop below standards, which standards matter more, or what constitutes not meeting standards is a tough question to answer without a more specific question from you. And, as I said, it might better be answered by DETC itself.

The United States Distance Learning Association is a non-profit association of members interested in distance learning. anyone, and I do mean any ONE can join (I looked at applying at one point). It recently (December 2004) started an accreidtation sub set (Distance Learning Accreditation Board USDLAB) but at this time I do not know of any school or program that is accredited by them. It should also be noted that currently they are not recognised by US Dept of Education (http://www.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html?src=qc) or by CHEA (http://www.chea.org/Directories/index.asp).

Membership in the USDLA is no more a validation of a school's academic quality, than membership in the American Automobile Association is validation of a person's driving ability.
