James Monroe University (cough cough) is in the process of changing its name to "Monroe University" (cough, hack). The web mistress is still editing the site-- there's a mix of Jamesless and Jamesful text all mooshed together on some pages.

The FAQ page (and who-all's asking those questions, anyway?) is largely finished, but the webmistress forgot to do a JMU -> MU replace so we still see jumbles like "Are the Schools Approved by Monroe University owned or controlled by JMU?" (Say thank you, for a change, why not? And I haven't been seeing much "it's" vs. "its" confusion, so you're improving, very good, congratulations.)

And MU still managed to retain that "private Grant from one of its most highly regarded alumni members" so they could "update [their] headquarters, hire additional professors and... lower fees for a limited time to help make [their] programs available to more applicants worldwide."

In the clothing business this is called a fire sale.

Azad is still absent from the faculty. His Bluetooth refrigerator project just doesn't cut it with SRU (oops-- JMU, er... MU), I guess. Same with Ishaq Shafiq: not as telegenic as Bob Stefaniak, he is still off the roster.

This site still says "James Monroe" all over the place.

Who do they think they're fooling, anyway?

All of the traditional consumers of higher education, of course: students, their employers, and the general public.

We might get it here, but the vast majority of situations aren't that scrutinizing. A fake degree from a fake school will do just fine. Sprinkle in a little rationalization ("It's state licensed," or "It's accredited by [such and such fake agency].") and you're good to go.

They're fooling all the right people.

less moosh, but the grammar isn't stellar

There's less moosh now, and you're very welcome, by the way. HOWEVER you still need help with "it's" and "its."

Here is how it works: "it's" is a contraction for "it is," while "its" is the possessive. For example, the sentence

Each school operates under it's own ownership and control.

is incorrect. Better grammar is this:

Each school operates under its own ownership and control.

Even so, the use of "own" followed by "ownership" is awkward and merits a rewording. You might consider this:

    Each school operates independently.

    Got that?

But it says right on the home page that their accreditation is equivilent to RA schools in the US. It MUST be true because it SAYS it right on the home page. I'm going for the martial arts degree by DL. HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYOOOOOOOOOOOOHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHACK!!! WHACK!!! WHACK!!!

Excellent work, Señor. Now mail the two halves of the board to us here at the university. Better still, whack it a few more times, so it will fit into our 4x4-inch postal campus.

Finally, a Degree I can get behind!

There are so very many martial arts "masters" out there with academic "degrees" that this ridiculous site will look flat out legitimate to them. As stupid as it is... I can absolutely guarantee success with this offering. Maybe our Mr. T, from this thread

    http://forums.degreeinfo.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19067&highlight=from+mars

    will be interested.

    Yeehaw!

you should have taken my advice

You really should have taken my advice. Instead we have this strained bit of wordsmithing:
    Ouch, that's poorly written.

I really love how MU issues degrees on behalf of, but won't vouch for, The Thing That Dovelos Calls A School.

I would be happy to rewrite the answer to the next FAQ for you too: "Q. How do Monroe University Degrees compare to similar U.S. online universities?"

Somehow I don't think you would want to use my answer.

Also, some amusement: in the now-password-protected OnlineLearningDirectoryForum, a regular troll posted a link to the picture attached to the next post

    BS in MA

The University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport Connecticut offers an undergrad degree in martial arts. They're mostly B&M and RA by the New England Association.

I'm just saying that a martial arts bachelors isn't as out there as it might sound.

    Re: BS in MA

Yes, I'm familiar with Bridgeport ("Moonie U" though, yes, RA and fully legit) and their new program. It actually looks pretty good though. The concentration areas in either Judo, Tijiquan, or TKD are interesting and...given who owns it, the korean TKD emphasis rather than a japanese art is no surprise.
However. There are over fifty (literally, a google search will show this) of Martial artist "masters" out there claiming doctorates in martial arts from non-existant institutions. And now, for a small fee and some bs requirements, folks can get that sheepskin from MU and claim an actual school. It just makes things worse.

Here is the only GAAT Martial arts doctoral program I know of...

    http://www.bupe.edu.cn/jgsz/htm/xzbm/wsc/htm/wsc_lbww.html

and I have never seen it claimed by one of these US "masters".
