What do people know about the Università delle Scienze Gastronomiche (University of Gastronomic Sciences) in Italy?
They are calling themselves fully accredited and offer bachelors' and masters' degrees.
They are attracting a lot of students from the US and Japan along with about 50% Italian students.
It all seems just a little bit dodgy to me...

The University of Gastronomic Sciences, a truly unique academic institution, was founded by Slow Food in conjunction with the regional authorities of Emilia-Romagna and Piedmont.

Our aim is to create an international research and training center, working to renew farming methods, protect biodiversity and maintain an organic relationship between gastronomy and agricultural science.

The University was founded officially on January 27, 2003 with the establishment of a Scientific Committee. On September 25th the Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences was created and Alberto Capatti was named Academic Coordinator.

The University of Gastronomic Sciences is a private university modeled on other prestigious Italian institutions. Its teaching activities are supported by an independent non-profit association (the Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences) that oversees organizational and financial matters.

The Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences is governed by an Assembly of Members (representatives of public and private bodies) who will contribute to the University's development and a Board of Directors, whose members also include the founders: Slow Food and the Regional Authorities of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna.

Private bodies and individuals play a key role in the University. Their input is significant in ensuring the ongoing success of the project, with financial and organizational contributions where necessary.

The Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences has received the official decree of University recognition from the Italian Ministry of Instruction, Universities and Research.

The University of Gastronomic Sciences is open to all those with an understanding of the cultural value of food and drink and with a desire to broaden their knowledge through this course.

Given its international scope, the University recruits students from all over the world. The fixed annual intake of students will ensure that teaching runs smoothly and enable constant feedback between teachers and pupils.

To enroll in the three-year Gastronomic Sciences degree, students need a secondary school diploma or equivalent qualification obtained in Italy or elsewhere. Before being accepted to the University, students need to complete the steps of the admission process and pass an entrance exam evaluating their qualifications, education and suitability to embark on a degree of this type. Students are required to have knowledge of two languages, English and Italian.
Students may also to apply for scholarships to obtain financial support (grants, bursaries).

Class Attendance and participation field seminars is compulsory, therefore students must live nearby throughout the academic year.

Enrolment in the University's two-year specialization course will be restricted to students who have successfully completed the three-year degree course at the University of Gastronomic Sciences or other equivalent institutions in Italy or elsewhere.

A highly regarded and innovative institution. When I was with Le Cordon Bleu, the Program Director that looked after our Master of Arts in Gastronomy program at the University of Adelaide, Dr Barbara Santich, was involved in discussions and concurrent research initiatives.

When did this happen? When they started teaching last year in their (admittedly spectacular) campus at Pollenzo they were still in the process of applying for "recognition" or accreditation. The students all seemed to be blissfully unaware of this at the time.

Wonderful concept though.

Regarding knowledge of the 2 prescribed languages: many of the approximately 50 Italian students spoke, understood, read and wrote English fairly well- others didn't. None of the international students spoke or understood Italian at all.
