This would be noteworthy only if they did not.

Again, congratulations to CCU's students and graduates. And so sorry to the students and graduates of schools that either won't or can't follow.

The Office of Degree Whatever in Oregon would probably have put CCU through the ringer if the school had sought approval in Oregon, so it was probably very prudent that CCU never sought their approval prior to accreditation.

Years ago, when I first noticed this list in Oregon, I spoke with both Alan and CCU about it. He seemed adamant to keep CCU on that list (but listing few of the other State Approved schools) and putting them in pretty shady company (most read like the last chapter in a John Bear book). CCU appeared unconcerned and took no further action, as far as I can determine. In retrospect, I wish they would have applied for approval in Oregon since there are very few States with these kinds of restrictions.

At this point ODA can say that California Coast did apply for ODA approval about three years ago, but only for their doctoral program in business. The application was made by an Oregon resident graduate of the institution, which is the normal process. ODA approval in most cases is program-specific, for example it is only the SCUPS Psychology doctorate that is ODA-approved.

CCU's application was unsuccessful but they were able to meet many of the required standards. CCU never applied for approval of any of their other programs. Our interactions with CCU were always very professional (their lawyer at the time, Kazuaki Uemura of Torrance, California, is the best we have ever worked with, and the very definition of professionalism), and although we did not allow use of their degrees, they have always appeared, in our view, to be among the better unaccredited schools. I was therefore not surprised that they obtained DETC accreditation for their non-doctoral programs.

Thanks for the information, Mr. Contreras!

I find it ironically delicious that certain self serving individuals bad mouthed the ODA because of CCU being on the list. I had guessed that the CCU doctorate program (which actually was substandard and a favorite with that particular crowd) was the program that had "failed".

In my opinion, the CCU crowd that was bad mouthing the ODA should now apologize to Mr. Contreras and the ODA. The ODA took your lame and undeserved abuse simply to protect the not so good name* of CCU.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA :D :D

*I say not so good name because of all the articles written calling CCU a degree mill. I'm not saying that they deserved a bad name (except perhaps for their doctorates) only that they had one.

Would it be in order to ask which required standards the CCU Ph.D. in Business did not meet?

    Mr. Contreras,

My review of available information shows that CCU previously had many doctoral programs, i.e., DBA, Ph.D. in Business Administration; Management; Engineering; & Psychology, and the Ed.D. Their Ph.D. programs does required a dissertation based on the requirements stated in their catalog.

Hence, in line with Mr. Russell's question, I thought the question ought to be ....which of CCU doctoral program did not make the garde in terms of the ODA requirements? Thank you Mr. Contreras.

Since ODA's program review requirements have changed once since that time, and may change slightly again in 2005, I'm going to let the issue rest, especially now that the school no longer offers the programs and has become accredited.

    Mr. Contreras,

A very sensible comment, you have made. I concur. Thank you.
