Regis University, the regionally accredited school in Denver, has filed suit against Saint Regis.

The Saint Regis site explains "that the Jesuit Monks of Regis University of Colorado are now making a complaint that St. Regis is infringing upon their name 'Regis' University."

I would have thought that it was the Regis administration, rather than a group of "Jesuit Monks" pressing the suit.

    Further,
That makes it sound like the SRU administration is threatening the Folks In The West who are often attributed with contol of the SRU group.

The SRU page points out that "St. Regis University is also in the final stages of re-accreditation by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Liberia and has always legally operated."

There has been a considerable amount of recent chatter on the AdvancedU forum about this impending reaccreditation. That would suggest that something is cooking over there: perhaps an upgrade to the NBOE site to provide a place to announce a reaccreditation of St. Regis? We'll have to wait to see what happens.

There are nasty things said, but in an oblique way, about "a group of individuals" who have driven the instigation of the Regis complaint. The honesty of journalists who have written SRU stories is impuned; commercial motivation of "two writers capitalizing on the sale of books about online degrees" is claimed; hostility towards institutions in Liberia (could they be implying racism??) is asserted; poor research by a government official is claimed. No names are named, though there is reference to a University of Illinois professor.

Bob Stefaniak's generous donation to a charitable cause is mentioned in the context of the sole manifestation of confusion over the identities of Regis and St. Regis.

A news story by Bill Morlin is in today's Spokane Spokesman-Review. Unfortunately, a paid subscription is required for access, but Bill has granted permission for it to be posted, and I assume he really is able to authorize, on behalf of the newpaper, that it appear in its entirety.
    So what happens next?

The odds of likely ending up in jail after robbing banks is probably stealing around a hundred thousand dollars total from a half dozen banks. (Note this is pure speculation on my part.) Whereas these academic frauds can steal millions over years. It is a shame that these academic frauds don't end up in jail more quickly than they do.

My hope is that someone has contacted Regis Philbin in order to inquire as to whether he has plans to sue anyone who might use the "Regis" name. I, for one, will be scanning the front page of the National Enquirer for updates. Perhaps we can initiate a "regis" class-action suit.

  4. So, St. Regis University no want to die.

I think they need to be closed by US Government authorities, maybe by the F.B.I. or Interpol.

    Hi Janko,

That's correct. Another misconception out there is that all members of Opus Dei are ordained priests. Someone once asked whether I am a priest after I disclosed my intention to join the organization.

I just looked at the announcement that has replacd SRU's webpage, and it appears that Saint Regis is flying a white flag (sort of). They say:

"Out of respect for the feelings and wishes of the Jesuit Monks at Regis University of Colorado, St. Regis University Liberia is voluntarily discontinuing the use of our legally registered name and moving voluntarily all programs, curriculum and services to another University until this matter is completely resolved.

We pray that the Jesuit Monks at Regis University of Colorado will remember our acts of sincerity, cooperation and respect of their wishes since our first contact with them years ago, and that again our immediate cooperation and willingness to end any conflict will help to bring this matter to closure."

So it sounds to me like the St. Regis that we all knew and loved is headed for the trashcan of history. But don't dispair, it intends to resurrect itself in some new and more glorious form.

I wonder what name it will resurface with, and what flag it will be flying when it does.

It's peculiar that this announcement still insists that SRU is 100% Liberian and has nothing to do with the United States. But serving a complaint on Ms. Randock half the world away in Mead WA sure seems to have gotten a quick response from this supposedly unrelated African institution.

Wow..I hadn't heard of AdvancedU before I read this thread.

There are a lot of people there who are:

    (a) Not big fans of degreeinfo ;)
    (b) REALLY deluding themselves.

I mean, after a while shouldn't all the furore over SR"U" help the truth sink in? Don't they get tired of having a bit of paper from an institution that they constantly have to defend?

    those other sites...

    ...in Bill Morlin's article include:

The Sighting Zone:"Have you seen unusual, mysterious or unexplained phenomena? Want documents to PROVE IT? Tell us about your sighting. Our officials will CERTIFY your report, give you solid documents, and file it in Washington DC." The "Washington DC" link is to

    "The Official Transcript Record Center"
    611 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, # 211
    Washington, DC 20003-4303.

There was also "Sky Broker" that had allowed customers to "Name a Star, Planet, Black Hole, Moon or Entire Galaxy for a loved one! Only $45"

Morlin missed a few. For example, there is the "Tootsie babes.com" site with url www.Tootsiebabes.com . It had described itself as "The #1 stop for all your foot fetishes." The domain registration has this as its administrative contact:

    Lorhan, H [email protected]
    611 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, # 211
    Washington, DC 20003-4303
    800 290 0021.

That 800 290 0021 phone number is also to be found at the top of the A Plus Real Estate Schools site.

There is also the "under construction" site with URL nude-amateur.us registered to

    SRU
    7 broad street
    monrovia
    Liberia
    [email protected]

as well as one with URL only-adult-sites.us registered to

    So who are they kidding?

    many are "professors" there

A number of them are "professors" with Saint Regis. I find it unlikely that they are unaware of the true nature of SRU.

    Hmmm...

    AllAfrica.com, at:

    http://allafrica.com/stories/200410111169.html

    Might be helpful to them:

"The St. Regis University, the release noted, has publicly made known to the World that it has a legal status to operate in Liberia through the permission of the Commission on High Education.

The Ministry said that was not true, and indicated that evidence suggests that whatever documents the University claims to have obtained from the Commission were never approved by the Commission and do not bear the signature of the Chairperson."

I also find it funny-odd that this supposed "African university" links to an Idaho white-supremacist publication to discredit Bill Morlin.

Would such a publication ever really come to the attention of an organization that's really in Liberia and not, oh, Spokane?

    Rochester picks up the story

The Rochester Democrat and Chroinicle picked up the story because of the inclusion of Richard J. Hoyer as a defendant in the Regis lawsuit. School suit names local man, Steve Orr, December 12, 2004.

Things change fast at St. Regis.

    Today's annoucement
(see here) is substantially different than yesterday's. It's much more combative, threatens countersuits, trashes Gollin and Contreras, and dismisses the news stories.

SRU says that it isn't out of business and that its programs have only temporarily been "transferred to another university".

Whoever wrote this was pretty angry.

a question for the lawyers here

How does discovery work in civil suits? Do Regis and Saint Regis have rights of access to each other's files during this kind of legal action?

My guess is that SRU capitulated so quickly so that the specifics of SRU ownership could remain obscured. I would assume that the first step in the lawsuit would have been to untangle that bit of information. If they tried to fight the lawsuit then all kinds of interesting things would be potentially relevant like number of degrees sold, where the victims/students/co-conspirators reside, etc.

    From http://saintregis.edu.lr/

Is that empathically as in Deanna Troi from Star Trek or as in people who can't spell shouldn't claim to run a university in Liberia or anywhere else?

I'm sensing that these guys feel threatened, as if their ride on the gravy train is about to end. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

I especially appreciate the reference to Star Trek. While I've never attended a convention and so can't be considered as a "Trekie," I am definitely a fan of the extended series. I hope the spin-offs continue to appear (although I'm guessing they're done).
As for our friends at St. Regis, they will never be done. They'll just reopen under a new name. After all, that's the M.O. isn't it? Set up an operation, make a killing, close up shop, move on to the next operation. If you'd like a good object lesson, go out to your local video store and rent a copy of "House of Games" with Lindsay Crouse and Joe Mantegna. Crouse fires the final shot, another good object lesson.
