    Berne University

I still have a real problem accepting that Berne University degrees are 'dubious'.

Berne are accredited by the Department of Education in the nation of St Kitts and are a member of the Association of International Universities (UNESCO).

John: My survey of registrars of properly-accredited schools, as presented at the AACRAO convention in 2000, found that fewer than 1% always accepted Berne degrees, 7% usually did, 7% sometimes did, 23% rarely, and 55% never. Whether or not it is a dubious school, it clearly is a dubious choice for someone who hopes to use the degree in his or her academic career.

I notice that the KIRO TV story calls them "a bit fishy" and "illegitimate."

    Re: Berne University

Berne operates from Pennsylvania without that state's approval, just as they did in New Hampshire.

Berne does not operate from the country from which it claims recognition.

Berne lost its Title IV funding eligibility; the USDoE had grave questions about the rigor of the doctoral programs and Berne's financial operations.

Berne gets a lot of bad press, almost all of it based on the lack of recognition of the degrees it issues.

One is left with a degree from a school recognized by a tiny island nation. There have been reports of individuals having their Berne degrees recognized, but this is hardly a universal condition. John's cautionary words should be heeded.

Berne seems to be one of those substandard schools that requires some real work for their substandard degree. Does this mean that they're a degree mill? It depends on one's definition of the term. They are slimy, substandard, and mislead so I don't have any problem with people calling them a degree mill.

How Could Berne University be Legitimate?

I read Adamsmith and wonder how anyone could feel Berne is "acceptable." If Berne was really a legitimate university, would you not think they would have an office in St. Kitts you can call and discuss their school? Try 869-466-2293 (the Berne office # in St Kitts) and if anyone answers at all, it will be a cab driver named Winston Duporte as the phone is forwarded to his house. The Berne University office in St. Kitts was closed permanently this past August and the faithful Administrative Assistant of 5 years (Jackie Farrell / 869-465-7568) was dismissed. Also dismissed after only six months on the job were the new Provost/Dr. Robertine Chadertine of Barbados, Assistant to the Provost /Dr. Raymond Haynes of St. Kitts, and Dr. Lincoln Carty of St. Kitts/ Dean of the School of Education. So who are the professors Berne now employs? Who is the administration? Who are the owners and board members? How do you contact any of these people to verify that Berne is legitimate? Most current students do not know where the university actually resides today and the web page is of no help at all. Being able to get answers might be a good start.
