It's to bad that other colleges and universitiys don't feel this kind of love either!

There are other more established options which are tuition free or near-free. If you are a Southern Baptist student and you attend one of their seminaries you can expect to go through tuition-free (there are a few "fees").

In my own denominational seminary we have a whole group of presidential scholars who going to graduate level RA/ATS school with no tuition expectations.

75 years ago lots of seminaries were tuition free. You had to qualify to get in but the church assumed responsibility for maintaining the school. Gradually over the years more and more of the burden was shifted to the student. Students still pay only a small portion of the cost of the education but they feel like they're carrying it all.

Quite true! American College of Metaphysical Theology offers degree programs at the "near-free" category.

I can't imagine how I forgot to list them! I'm just not thinking very clearly today.

    Brad,

You said "if you're Southern Baptist you can basicaly go to one of their seminaries for free?" Well, I am, and I WISH THEY WERE FREE! I was actually accepted at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, but the tuition is sky-high. I found them to be very dishonest in the amount of student aid they could offer me. It's still a great institution, just out of my price range--that's yet another reason I chose Trinity. :)

    Free--if only! he he

GBC... Have you worked through your local Baptist Conference? In some cases, a Baptist Seminary student can obtain tuition reimbursement if approved locally. They are supported similar to the way Missionaries are supported. <Side Note: I'm a bi-vocational IFB Minister, and we are always being asked to contribute to the Regional Conference for such things.>

I apologize. My Baptist information is out of date. Even though I'm not a Baptist, I was a field ed supervisor for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in the early 90's and I remember that Southern Baptist students were going tuition free back then. I checked tonight and they now have to pay half of the normal tuition -- only $134/hr (compare to Trinity's $175 -- although Southwestern charges full tuition for everyone taking Internet classes -- doesn't make sense to me).

Southern Baptist Seminary charges $143/hour for SBC students (and that's before student aid) -- still cheaper than Trinity. New Orleans Baptist is $130/hour. Midwestern Baptist is $120/hour. It may not be free but it is very reasonable for SBC students. And I believe that all their graduate seminaries are both ATS and regionally accedited.

Then there is the Golden Gate Baptist Seminary. I can't find anything about tuition anywhere on their website -- although they must charge something since considerable space is devoted to how to get a scholarship!

    Brad,

I figured you'd be pleasantly surprised. And as far as Golden Gate goes, yes--it is very confusing. I just decided for my needs, Trinity worked out best for me. And of course, I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the RA thing. :)

    Jerry,

Southern Baptists in the area I live don't really have the resources to support sending a student to seminary--sure there are scholarships, but many of them are small (although every bit is certainly appreciated!). Since I'm Southern Baptist, we have the national convention (which funds the seminaries), the state convention, and the local associations. Our local head of the association would love to see our association have a fund to help students like myself, but it hasn't flown. I'll see where we are at with that later today, our Association's annual meeting is today. I just think its a shame that you have to pay so much these days.

And I suspect that the Trinity program is more accesible because it is all pretty much distance education. I'm glad that you found a school that works well for you. That's why it is good that there are multiple options. Choice is a good thing when it comes to education.
