    Samuel Bennett,

This issue came up in Liberia's higher education circles quite some time ago frankly. In fact, shortly after taking over at the Embassy here in Washington, the Ambassador began looking into the matter at the request of the Ministry and the Commission. My sense is the Liberian authorities were deeply concerned about the effect this entire SRU situation was having on the transferrability and the perceived credibility of degrees obtained at legitimate Liberian institutions such as UL and CUC. So they went about conducting a careful investigation into how SRU obtained its "accreditation" in the first place. Once that matter was sorted out, the government could re-emphasize its longstanding policy. Part of the problem was that SRU built and maintained the Embassy of Liberia's former website in apparent exchange for having its name listed with other "accredited" institutions on the site. In short, SRU was able to confer upon itself some legitimacy and raise thousands of dollars in the process, while simply building and maintaing a website for the embassy in return. What a mess it was! Fortunately, its has been cleared up and those who sought to mortgage our national integrity for a few meager dollars from SRU are no longer as influential or strategically placed in our foreign service as they once were.

It's a painstakingly slow process but things are changing.

    By one Tatu-Sio.
