Is Mr. Contreras going too far?

I respect and share the ideals and objectives of Mr. Contreras but I ask the question: Is he not going too far ?

He is an employee of the State of Oregon and by mentioning his qualities and title, he makes, in this discussion board, his personal positions official.

I like him, but a fight is not a crusade or a Djihad, and sometimes he seems to shoot from the hip" a little too fast.

Some samples of what could be dangerous for our mutual cause:

He does not seem to have a real procedure to include and label Diploma Mill in the ODA list. The Kennedy Western Law suit is an example. The results could be devastating.

The phrase " They have to prove it" in the thread Oregon/vs foreign institution could be dangerous and inconstitutional. If an institution is labeled "diploma Mill' in the ODA list, I hope that the State of oregon should be able to prove it, and to to document it following the principle "innocent before being proven guilty".

In another thread he said that a French "thing" threatened the attorney general of the State of Oregon. In fact, it seems that it was a judicial act called " sommition Interpellative" adressed to him and the governor.

We are all on his side, but please do not misrepresent the facts, specially when you are talking legal procedure.

I am afraid as the phrases on the "UK Governmentauthorisation" is dangerous as it can open the gate to fake universities .

Being an official, Mr. Contreras shoud be more thoughtful in order to defend better his ideas.

He should remember that like in Miranda everything he says should and will be used against his just cause.

    The proud Diploma Mill hunter

I cannot help but notice that five out of a total of seven measly posts by gmail deal with Alan Contreras. One can only wonder whether gmail has an agenda of his or her own.

One thing I do know: Mr. Contreras, educated as an attorney, would not do anything "inconstitutional" [sic]. :D

Who was it at the disbanded Collegehints site that called himself "a Degree Mill Hunter"? I've forgotten.

    keep coool man !

    Why this type of question/insinuation?

I like the fight of Mr. Contreras but I may question sometimes his ways. I am not against him and I share his ideals.

I do not know if he is a lawyer as said in a thread, but I think that sometimes he does not act like one.

My point of view: Lets fight for the good cause but on good grounds not on every grounds, which could be sandtraps. The Kennedy Western lawsuit troubles me, when I see some alarming threads in this site. If Mr. Contreras is legally defeated we all loose.

    Could we agree on that?

I do not know the "College Hints" site but I will visit it. I do not know the "Degree Mill hunter". I am a 25 years old female faculty member (TA) of a State College in foreign languages.

Could we elevate the discussion and keep it at the right level. Not through personal attacks like GW Bush and J. Kerry.LOL

    Re: keep coool man !

Hi Gmail. Visting the Collegehints forum is going to be kind of tough. It was formed as a for-profit venture and attracted several anti-degreeinfo/pro-unaccredited school posters. There was some good disscussion going on, but also a lot of abusive degree mill and agenda promoting garbage. The moderator did an admirable job trying to keep up with constantly needed deletions. Ultimately the owner closed the forum. I suspect the main reason was because huge legal liability involved.

One thing I find interesting is every one feels free to critize the ODA and Alan. Personally I believe 90% of the criticisms are ungrounded and based on personal bias. In any event I doubt the ODA puts any weight in them.

Mr. Contreras does the bidding of Oregon's self-proclaimed "Citizen Legislature" -- 90 folks who meet for a few months every other year to make and change the laws. While they listen to Contreras, they also listen to many others, and they are fiercely independent, by tradition and, I think, actuality (viz, the only suicide assistance law in the US).

Simple example: Mr. Contreras, he told me, would like to change the designation of certain schools from "substandard" to "nonstandard" but can only do so with legislative permission. (They meet again next January.)

It may be a moot issue for one of the "nonstandard" schools if in Jan. DETC gives them the nod.

Because DETC has no candidacy process, this can be said of any applicant, no matter how bad. Or how many times it is denied.

I should have been more specific. What I meant was if they are granted accreditation in Jan. and the Oregon legislature gives Mr Contreras the OK to call them "nonstandard" in Jan. it would be a moot issue at that point for that particular school.
