    This one baffles me.

The Canadian School of Management had a complex background, including association with the founded-by-the-same-person (George Korey) Northland Open University (which didn't actually exist in Whitehorse), gaining, then losing DETC accreditation, then regaining it on its acquisition by a British DETC-accredited place.

And now I am gazing at a set of credentials and diploma from the Canadian School of Management Institute of Graduate Studies, "authorized by Manitoba and the States of Hawaii and Iowa to grant academic degrees," with the diploma signed by George Korey, and "registered at Iowa City, Iowa."

Accreditation claimed from the International Accreditation Commission for Postsecondary Education Institutions, which has also accredited two mailbox universities in Alabama (run from Rhode Island), Nasson and the United States University.

The diploma sent me is dated 3 years ago.

It looks like Northland Open University has made a miraculous rebirth. I always loved the name - reeks of respect.

As I have followed the fortunes of the Canadian School of management and Northland Open University for the last 15 years, I could write pages but will offer just a summary.

In 1976 George Korey, a legitimate educator(I think) formed the Canadian School of Management to offer university level courses. Based in Ontario, which jealously guards state control of degrees, it was without any degree granting authority.

Somehow they managed to incorporate Northland Open University to offer their degrees. I can only suspect that they flew below the radar in the Yukon Territory which only had about 15,000 population. They were incorporated under federal letters patent because, at the time, I doubt that the territory offered local incorporations. They never operated in the Yukon, instead they seemed to reside in Aylmer, Quebec.

For about 5 years or more, CSM offered the courses and NOU granted the degrees. Someone named Don Gyallay was president of NOU while George Korey was president of CSM.

There seems to have been a falling out as CSM went on to incorporate at least a couple unaccredited universities in the US to offer degrees and had something going on in Pakistan.

I have seen the Manitoba thing, but they may have simply registered their federally incorporated corporation to do business there. I doubt that they were registered as an educational institution.

CSM had a long affiliation with ICM of the UK and about 5 years ago ICM purchased the school. ICM also started the University of Action Learning in Colorado (now Revan's U). Revan's grants degrees to CSM graduates.

CSM offered real education programs that required real work and have never been anything like a diploma mill. Now they offer what they describe as action learning. For 5 or more years, one could take the first half of an MBA at CSM and apply it to an MBA at City University in Bellevue, Washington. I think the school had respect everywhere but the Ontario Ministry of Education, who again (6 months ago) turned them down for degree status.

Northland Open University, after the break with CSM, offered their own degrees. At some point they offered degrees in concert with ICS and they were featured prominently on matchbooks.

I have done searches on the internet for NOU and found only dregs. It seems like they are being revived by the ICM group. Since I love the name so much, maybe I'll have to check them out but they just seem to offer Revans degrees.

I took 7 Fellow of Business Administration (MBA?) courses from CSM about 10 years ago. The professors, at the time, were University of Toronto or York University professors who were excellently qualified and good. I am not sure of the quality of their academic staff today.

George Korey is (or was, I'm not sure which) a member of Union Institute and University's Board of Trustees.

Korey had an excellent, legitimate appearing, resume. He was a professor at the U of Toronto when he started CSM. Canada was just the wrong location for private universities, not operated by churches.

    From IMC website

"As a condition of reaccreditation. publicity material should be reviewed to make clear that Bachelors and Masters degrees are awarded by Revans University and that doctoral programmes lead to degrees of membership (2.2.13)"

Can anyone guess what a doctoral program leading to degrees of membership means??

I suspect that if DETC starts granting doctorates, they too will come from Revans.

Or their mutual parent, IMC. There was a time not long ago when IMC awarded doctorates. They were trying to get them included in DETC's accreditation by terming them "first professional" doctorates, which are within DETC's scope--but DETC ultimately didn't buy the idea of a DBA (or, earlier, the Ph.D.) as a "first professional doctorate."

Anyway, IMC used to award doctorates based on programmes at the CSM. CSM would award a designation, IMC the degree. But IMC has dropped its doctoral degrees (which, for an additional fee, would be "endorsed" by Southern Cross University).

Of course, I said that and THEN looked at IMC's site. I see they no longer offer degrees at all, deferring to their member schools. But it's all very British (not a compliment), so it's hard to figure out. The site talks about BAC accreditation of its programs and the BAC's appreciation for its courses. But no mention of degrees anymore, except on the application form:

IMCA is a Corporation Noble and a multinational professional association. It was originally established in 1964 in England, limited by the guarantee of its Members. IMCA is required to declare on this application form that the authority for the nomenclature used in its professional awards and professional and academic degrees is that of several multinational educational jurisdictions through IMCA's Common Agreement (1988) with Revans University - The University of Action Learning in the USA, IMCA in the State of Queensland for the Commonwealth of Australia, IMCA in Finland, in New Zealand, in the Federation of Malaysia and in the SAR of Hong Kong, with the Institute of Management in Papua New Guinea, with the Canadian School of Management in Ontario, Business School Nederland in The Netherlands Caribbean and South Africa, and Revans University in the Republic of Vanuatu to work together in a single 'Common' Multinational Professional and Academic Board. This Common Agreement (1988) as revised in 1999 continues and further extends authority for reciprocal transfer credits (see Regulation 20 ) towards professional and academic degrees, fellowships and degrees of membership, for all who successfully follow membership qualification programmes under these Ordinances that have been approved by the Common Multinational Professional and Academic Board whether they are conducted by IMCA in the United Kingdom or elsewhere.

Specific degrees (no doctorates) are listed on a drop-down list on the online application form.

I check them out every couple of years. It gets stranger every time. Perhaps someone more familiar (and more patient) could tell us what I'm missing?

    Fees are too expensive.
The Revans Uni charge US$ 7500 Undergrads and US $15000.00 for Masters.

And if I remember, if you take the Canadian School of Management program, there is a hefty fee to get the Revans degree.
