The State of Hawaii, by its Office of Consumer Protection, filed suit today against University of Advanced Research-Hawaii Campus (a Hawaii corporation) and Frederick A. Mitchell. The suit alleges that the defendants violated various provisions of Hawaii's Unaccredited Degree Granting Institutions Law (Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 446E) and seeks injunctive relief, restitution, civil penalties and other equitable relief.

Why doesn't Hawaii require a bit more up front like a properly zoned physical location and local mind and management for unaccredited schools. A bond to help pay for your time would also be useful.

Then you could get back to prosecuting jay walking tickets.

How many unaccredited degree granting schools are there and how many have you shut down?

Dennis, your initial questions are best addressed to the state legislature. As to the numbers, we are in the process of updating our office's website to include information about all cases filed. There has never been an official count of the number of unaccredited universities operating in or from Hawaii or claiming to operate under Hawaiian law. It is safe to say that prior to the strengthening of Hawaii law in 1999, that number was in the hundreds. Currently we believe the number of unaccredited institutions is less than 20.

WellDone! It looks like after the Hawaiian tighten the law, most of the unacc university will not be easy to form overnigth and Hawaii state will no longer as colorful before 1999.

Mr. Brunton works for Consumer Protection, I don't believe they concern themselves with jay walking tickets.

BTW, is that one of your insults that is supposed to be funny?

    Insult - not

    Funny - yeh - a bit

It was just a comment that if the problem was handled up front he wouldn't have a job. But thanks for defending the honour of people who might actually have a sense of humour. Oh - he's a lawyer - forget that last statement.
