Did this guy really suggest that requesting info from the applicant is better security than requesting it from the university? Or did the reporter mangle what he said?

    Lying on application forms

Isn't it funny how catching lying is? Employers know quite a bit about deception because it has always been an easy way to escape the blame for their own greed-based decisions, which usually have really big consequences for the country as a whole. In the fifties and the sixties they were telling us that if the government would just put up more schools then they would have a trained workforce. Then they decided that the workforce, educated by that time, really should get experience. But don't look at American employers. "We can't afford to train people. Gotta hit the road running or no deal." So many of us had to go overseas to get training that American employers wouldn't give us. However, when we returned they had other excuses for not hiring us. Excuses or lying--it's all the same. American employers have no cause to complain because they started the whole thing. There hasn't been natural unemployment in the U.S.A since the Great Depression. Since that time, it has always been artificially created unemployment. Lying aways catches up with people and with groups of people such as companies. No surprises there.

I think he suggests that asking to see the actual paper degree or transcript is better than asking the university to check its database.

Well, it almost worked for John Davy.

This approach may not work either. Some diploma printing companies can provide very slick transcript and diploma replicas. One such organization, www.backalleypress.com can print the real thing!!
Prospective employers need to have transcripts and diplomas sent to them directly by the university (by courier in a sealed envelope). This may be the only solution to this dilemma.

I think the next step in resume fraud will be people that provide both services - hacking into school databases and providing fake transcripts/diplomas.

On the part of a getting certified transcript, can't those be faked by getting into a database also? Don't colleges just keep those in a database as well? If that could be hacked into, then the person committing fraud could just have the school issue a "legitimate" diploma to replace the "lost" one or have a "legitimate" transcript sent to employers. :(
