  2. The State of Hawaii says they're operating illegally.

Speaks volumes about their references, accreditation, and recognition to me.

The recognition of a university by other universities depends on its accreditation. Regional Accreditation (RA) almost guarantees recognition, and national accreditation recognized by the US Department of Education is accepted sometimes.

AUH claims to be "a chartered member of the Accreditation Association of American College and Universities (AAACU)" (http://www.auh.edu/about.htm). This is a bogus accreditor. Do a Google search, and you'll see that AAACU doesn't even have a Website, and the only other institution claiming this "accreditation" is South West University of USA, which has an amazingly similar Web page (http://www.swuusa.com).

AUH also claims "It has also made the requisite applications toward the processes leading to recognitions endorsed by the US Department of Education"; but given that Hawaii is suing it, I think it's much more likely to be shut down than to become accredited.
