Hello. New member Gabe here. Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but does anyone have information on the new "Internationl Graduate Center" in St. Croix? The webpage is at http://www.nationalinstitutes.org/ and I have seen nothing about it so far, even on the alt.distance.education site. in advance, thanks! Gabe
Welcome aboard. I'll look at their stuff more carefully tonight and give you what I find. I see no reference to any accreditation, and know nothing about the USVI supervision/licensing (if any) of unaccredited schools.
The “campus” of the International Graduate Center is a rented The UPS Store (formerly Mail Boxes Etc.) mailbox in Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The school was founded and is run by a bunch of guys that were formerly affiliated with Berne University (a school considered by many to be a degree mill), and appears to follow a similar model. When I spoke with U.S. Virgin Island officials two years ago (when the school first appeared on the scene), they had no knowledge of the existence of the school and assured me that no license to operate had been granted to such an entity. It doesn't seem as anything has changed since then.
USVI is (weirdly) in the Middle States region Universities in USVI and Puerto Rico are regionally accredited by Middle States. The only university in USVI that they list is University of the Virgin Islands. In other words, they seem to be in the same position as an unaccredited, state-approved university operating in any of the fifty U.S. states. -=Steve=-
Re: USVI is (weirdly) in the Middle States region Except, as Gus points out, for the state approved part.... -=Steve=-
Now I needn't bother. Thanks, Gus, for saving me some work and for another sharp-as-a-tack post. I had a mailbox at one of those stores when I lived in Milwaukee. I feel so stupid now: I could have been running a university.
The website is registered to "MC Squared" at 235 Main St. Montpelier, VT. The registrant e-mail is: [email protected] Greenriver.org: "Green River is a leading developer of web based software applications and data management systems for nonprofit organizations, government agencies and small businesses, especially those that promote education for all students, public health and a sustainable environment." Now, according to a web directory, there is one "Knapp" who lives in ____, VT which is the city that Green River is stated as being located in on their website. I checked to see who greenriver.org was registered to and it's the same Knapp which registered the "National Institute" website. FURTHERMORE, the registrant address of greenster.org is the SAME ROAD as the address shown for the "Knapp" in the web directory I looked at. *Note* I intentionally left out first names, initials, full e-mail address, as well as cities for the individual for security purposes. I think that about wraps it up folks.
