  1. I received as a "junk mail" today a link discussing accreditation in the US. While this is definitely diploma mill propaganda, I thought I would post the article/link here so the group could discuss the merits of the article, etc.

They say: "What is needed in the United States is a minimum set of Accreditation Standards administered by the Department of Education by which all private accrediting bodies must abide."

I say: What about the GAAP? http://www.degree.net/guides/accreditation_guide.html

They say: "What we have not seen in any of the many articles we have read on accreditation is the fact that non-acceptance of the legality of institutions deemed legal in states where they operate by other states and federal government agencies (like the Air Force) not accepting degrees from non-traditional universities into their personnel system records is simply unconstitutional."

I say: It seems fairly simple to me. In order to receive federal loans, etc. a school *MUST* be accredited by a recognized association. Such is the same for military tuition assistance. It too, is federal funding for education and as such, obides by the same standards.

They say: "There is a sense in American Academia that foreign educational systems and universities are inferior to American systems and universities. They seem to think that a college or university degree from a foreign college or university where English is not the native tongue is inferior because the recipient has difficulty reading and understanding American “English”. This is the height of snobbery. What they overlook is the fact that many of the graduates from American institutions of higher learning cannot read and understand American “English” either."

I say: Show me some facts to back that up. It seems like a bunch of pompous bull***t to me.

They say: "Many of these traditional universities are offering Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctor’s degrees based in part on life experience portfolios via distance learning. They are claiming accreditation by the traditional accrediting body for their distance learning programs."

I say: Of course. It's the same material. It's simply shown in a different manner.

I'll let other folks tackle the rest or tackle what I say. My eyes are hurting.
