    Salut!

Thank you everyone for this very wonderful forum of friendship and helpfulness.

I hope that I am posting in the right forum.

I have performed searches and could not find the answers to all of my questions. Please forgive me if I appear ignorant on these matters. I live in Georgia, but english is not my first language.

My step-son has an associate degree in accounting from Draughons Junior College. He has some medical problems but is not on disability. He has chronic prostatitis, epilepsy, and bowel problems. He wants to find a US Federal job so that he will have good health insurance.

Draughons is accedited by The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). http://www.acics.org/content.cfm?L1=6

He is considering the Excelsior College program of BS in Liberal Studies, because he can take many exams. (Thanks for this forum, I found out about this college here).

But I do not understand about this ACICS. Is this the same as the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools(SACS)?

Can he get a US Federal job with the ACICS accrediting, because many government jobs state that the degree must be accredited ("Graduated from an accredited college or university")

I do not understand all of this. So, will the ACICS work for a US Federal job, because it is accredited? Some people never heard of his school and he thinks this hurts him.

Also, I told my step-son to study accounting and in maybe 3 or 4 more years, he can have a master's degree in accounting, then take CPA exam. That way he can do office work.

But he wants a US Federal job now so that he will have good health insurance.

I know that I write of lots of things here, but can the persons here please give me advice?

    Thank you.

ACICS is a national accrediting body. Which is different from SACS which is a Regionally Accrediting body.

As for the Federal Government, I can't help you there. Good luck with yours educational and employment future.

The required accreditation may depend on the particular government agency/department applying to. Some are very specific in stating that the degree must be from a regional accreditation body -- i.e. SACS.

One way to find out about the ACICS accreditation is to ask the government Office of Personnel Management. They can be contacted through their online job site. The contact page is: http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/contact.asp

What I found out from the USA Gov't

Hi ! Thanks to everyone for the friendly and helpful attitudes here.

Well, I emailed the fedjobs address, and from the response, I was able to ascertain that the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools can be used to accredit a degree to qualify for a US Federal job.

Thanks and I hope that I can be of help to others here.

Thank you for your inquiry submitted to USAJOBS, the official job
site of the United States Federal Government.

The degree must be accredited by one of the accrediting agencies or associations recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.

Go to this site to find accrediting agencies.
