Are JD and MD really lower than a master's degree?

United State educational system: The first professional degree (MD, JD, etc) is number 6 on the list (lower than master's, CAGS, Ed.S, and PhD/DBA/EdD). I had always thought that a first professional degree is considered equivalent to a master's degree. In most colleges, JD and MD are the minimum credentials required for tenure.

School leaving and higher education credentials:

    1. High School Diploma
    2. Associate Degree
    3. Bachelor's Degree
    4. Diploma
    5. Certificate
    6. First Professional Degree
    7. Post-Bachelor's Diploma
    8. Master's Degree
    9. Certificate of Advanced Study
    10. Education Specialist
    11. Doctorate

This seems to be a list of common American qualifications and somebody's idea of roughly where they might fall in relation to each other. I wouldn't treat it as anything more than that. It isn't prescriptive or authoritative.

I'm a little put off by the incessant emphasis on "higher" and "lower" that infests academia. But I guess that I shouldn't find it surprising in a realm built around the pursuit of "titles". There is a faded mustiness to the academic peerage though: Does a Marquess outrank an Earl? Is a Ph.D. really "higher" than an M.D.?

At some point one has to ask what "higher" really means.

In my opinion, an M.D. is typically the *highest* degree for a medical clinician. A Ph.D. might stick his nose in the air and announce that the M.D. is inferior to an M.A, but he'd best keep that opinion to himself while he's in the hospital. The M.D. has the medical licence and the Ph.D. doesn't.

#4&7: A pre- or post- baccalaureate credential that is awarded after completion of certain number of credit hours. If it is awarded as a post-baccalaureate degree, it usually requires less number of credit hours than a master's degree.

#5: A pre- or post-baccalaureate credential that is awarded after completion of certain number of credit hours. If it is awarded as a post-baccalaureate degree, it usually requires less number of credit hours than a master's degree.

#9 (Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies, CAGS): This is awarded by some schools to a doctoral student who has sucessfully completed all course works but has failed to complete his/her dissertation.
