Oregon still lists them as a diploma mill. What was it you wanted to know about them?

To my knowledge, they have absolutely no legal standing as a university.

I am just asking around to see if there have been any new developments.

I read, read and re-read the discussions that appear to date and I have to say that I find the entity a bit intriguing due to the Canadian courts involvement and the subsequent rulings. I know the rulings were not conclusive but they also seem to give Vancouver SOME credibility, even if you disagree with the entity's concept.

The fact that they have been around for over 25 years also baffles me. I am not so naive to think that the dregree would allow anyone to teach or otherwise advance in an academic scenario but it just doesn't seem to be the " typical " mill.

    Thanks

Depending on the state or province you live in some laws regarding incorporation and business registration fall under the jurisdiction of cities and counties. VU is one of those entities that neither falls here nor there. The city of Vancouver does not have clear laws regarding the incorporation of private schools. They've been around for 25 years because the province and the city of Vancouver don't know how to regulate and enforce compliance on this type of institution. Had this institution been incorporated in Ontario or New York State, they would have had their license revoked a long time ago!

    Vancouver University

Vancouver University act in the same fashion as Excelsior College in that to receive a degree with VanU. you must have transferred credits from other accreditated schools, CLEP, PLAR etc. After a review of your file, they advise you what is required to finish your degree and then you must take those courses at an accredited institution. Van U. like Excelsior does not have courses. Once completed the coursed at another accredited institution they re-review your "education portfolio" ....you get the story.

While not recognized by the BC Ministry of Education the issue regarding the courts involvement is that Van U. is a registered charity under applicable BC law, and that they have been doing this type of "external degree" process for over 30 years accepting only credits from "accredited and verifiable" schools. In addition, BC Education laws do not apply to registered charities (again...new legal territory).

So in a nutshell, we have a non-accredited institution providing degrees that accept only credits from other accredited schools (a la Excelsior). But because this form of external degrees in Canada is very new to the beareaucrats.

This is just my addition to this discussion....last I heard was that after the case was dismissed in court....they were permitted to continue to operate. This issue seems to be more than just a school offering degrees....it's about education laws vs. charity laws, external degrees vs. traditional degrees, etc.
