So we have Atlantic National with a mailing address in California and Pacific National with a New Jersey address. Does this mean that when Arctic National is located it will have a Florida address?

Quit whining, Dennis. How do you think the ol' Carpathian feels about Transylvania University (RA) being in Kentucky?

 

And of course there's California State University in Pennsylvania, but Pennsylvania State University is not in California, although it may well be asked to leave Pennsylvania if their football team doesn't improve.

 

That must be especially hard to stomach (do Carpathians burp blood?) on Halloween.

Transylvania University is kind of cool. As every Carpathian knows, its name is Latin for 'the other side of the woods', in this case the Appalachian Mountains. It was founded in 1780 when a land company was trying to open up what was then the western frontier. (The company's chief scout was Daniel Boone.) The region was known at the time as Transylvania and was subsequently admitted to the Union in 1792 as the State of Kentucky. 'Transy' as it's called was America's 16th university and was the country's first university located west of the Appalachians.

Transy is proud that "George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Aaron Burr were early supporters. Henry Clay was a law professor and a member of Transylvania's board of trustees. Among other distinguished alumni are Stephen Austin, Cassius M. Clay, two U.S. vice presidents, a Supreme Court justice, 50 U.S. senators, 101 U.S. representatives, 36 governors, and 34 ambassadors."

I knew that. Some of my non-Carpathian forbears were related by marriage to Henry Clay and ran a school in early 19th c. Lexington.

To make matters worse, California University of Pennsylvania (no "State") offers "online sexual harassment training." Isn't there quite enough sexual harassment already without using DL?

 

Probably feel the same way most Transylvanians did when they woke up one morning to find out they were Romanians.

John: Not quite yet, please. When we were in Siberia a couple of years ago, we visited an incredibly remote Old Believers village on Lake Baikal. In this village of 500, there was an American ecologist who had come there with the Peace Corps 20 years ago, and stayed. He was working on a DL Master's degree from the University of Idaho, funded by the Siberian government because, he believed, his degree was coming from Moscow.

 

I just want to know what the Magi were doing in Pennsylvania.

 

And there is Indiana University of Pennsylvania, too. Which reminds me of a saying of my Dad, who graduated from Penn State, by the way. He used to say that Pennsylvania was the only place where Indiana could play football against California, win, and then nobody would think it was unusual...

Perhaps they came to foreordain Richard Schweiker's selection by Ronald Reagan as his choice for the VP slot if RR received the 1976 GOP Pres. nod! Or, maybe yet, they wanted to convert from Zoroastrianism to Quakerism or they were simply hungry after such a long journey and were acutally looking for Hershey!
