    From the Chronicle:

    A HAVEN NO MORE?
    • Mississippi higher-education officials, alarmed that online diploma mills may be setting up shop in their state, are asking the Legislature to grant them more authority to shut down the faux institutions. (9/30/2003)

Can't access the article but good for my home state! Whether or not the legislature takes action or not will depend on the next Speaker of the House. The Speaker is the most powerful politician in the state.

Higher education officials in Mississippi have asked the state's legislators to crack down on diploma mills operating in the state. According to John Bear [...], Mississippi is one of three states yet to pass tough legislation against diploma mills, the other two being Alabama and Wyoming. William E. McHenry of the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning is asking that the state require institutions of higher education operating in the state to be accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. McHenry also wants the state government to streamline the process for prosecuting institutions that do not adhere to the rules. State Senator Terry C. Burton said the legislature would take up the issue in its next session and would work to institute regulations that would not affect any of the state's legitimate institutions of higher learning, some of which do not seek federally recognized accreditation.

Great news! hopefully another weak link in the USA fight against degree mills will be strengthened. Just the type thing that I'm sure the K-W paid lobbyist is fighting in Wyoming. These degree mills have too much money and they're being backed into a corner. e.g., K-W has fled three states already. It's going to make the last of the weak links even harder to clean up.

    > These degree mills have too much money

 What is the right amount of money for a mill to have? Shouldn't it have zero money, or be in debt?

Yes, I graduated with a B. S. in 1974. I don't know if that bookstore was there of not when I attended DSU. I was sorry to see my church, First Christian, Disciples (Cleveland) closed when I visited there about 10 years ago. I contacted the Regional Minister and was told the congregation had dwindled. When I attended, while at DSU, it was a nice sized congregation with a number of DSU staff and faculty in attendance. I have been meaning to find out more about what happended but never followed through. I may do so now. Take care. By the way, do you know any Mann's in Indianola? My roommate, Gary Mann, was from there.

  11. You went to Delta State? In Cleveland?

Wow. What a small world. I used to visit that area all the time. There was a nice Christian book store with "cotton" in the title.
