USDLA membership doesn't really mean anything. It is not an accrediting agency.

    "A Business Journal investigation found:
Company literature described the chairman [Robert K. Bettinger] as having a doctorate and masters degrees, but he has neither.
The university accredition service touted by the company doesn't have offices at addresses given in Switzerland and Washington, D.C. [...]
The location listed as headquarters for Virtual Academic's main university [Barrington University] is the location of an answering, secretarial and bookkeeping service."

Jimmy's observation was amplified by Bruce: "the USDLA is a private organization that anyone can join. Membership is not a sign of legitimacy any more than membership in the American Automobile Association (AAA) is an endorsement of one's driving ability."

Barrington University is state-licensed in Alabama, but Alabama is generally considered one of the laxest states. It is illegal to use a Barrington University degree in Oregon.

    Stick with Regionally Accredited schools.

    Mark Isreal;
I would like to thank you very much for that VERY INTERESTING link to schools legal in Oregon. I work in Oregon, two managers at levels above me have their degrees from schools listed on that site. (One is in Wyoming, and the other is in Liberia.) I was declined for tuition assistance from the company to enter MBA program at a Scottish school that I had located in Bear's Guide.
Again, I can't thank you enough for that link!

Stay away from Barrington. Try other inexpensive RA schools.

If the schools are from Wyoming and Liberia in the Oregon list then they are pathetic degree mills and the two managers are academic frauds. Sounds like some more time bombs going off.

I got this e-mail from Barrington Uni in Dec 2002

    Dear ****,

Thanks for responding back to me. Unfortunately at this time we are not regionally accredited, but we are seeking our accreditation which should be awarded to us sometime at the first of the year. If you would keep checking our website for updates or you can check back with me sometime in Jan. and if I know anything further I will be glad to let you know.

    Thanks and Happy Holidays!

    ******

Check their web site for RA info if this person was right.

Now THAT is an interesting e mail. It MIGHT be ehough to support a criminal fraud charge.

This is standard millspeak. For example, Golden State School of Theology has displayed the following statement on their Web site for ages.
    • ”However, the day will come in the near future that GSST will acquire accreditation. Many of the past government restrictions imposed by accreditation have changed in recent years, and we expect to be able to add this benefit to our programs soon.”

I believe that the voters in Alabama recently rejected a proposed tax increase. That's too bad. Alabama could use some of the extra tax revenue to beef up its State Education Dept so that Alabama could more closely evaluate its SA (and non-RA) colleges and universities.
